he was always scamming someone or pissing off enough people they decided to corner him and have it out with him.

My dad told me the same thing, if a bully messes with you you fight back; hard. Then the bully knows not to mess with you anymore.
Seems like your son did the right thing, you should be proud.
Now go buy him a 14! (If I got a BK14 when I was in middle school, that would be the coolest gift in the world!)

Yeah, most school policies don't recognize self defense anymore. It's stupid. My son got suspended last year as well for the same thing. I'm sorry this happened to your son, but I'm glad he took it to the bully!

My rules are simple...if you start a fight, you'll be punished at home as well as school, but if you're forced to defend yourself and get in trouble at school, we can look at it as a long weekend!

At my highschool self defense is running away. 2 principals told me that. Does that mean if I get into a fight im gonna run. HELL NO if somebody starts a fight with me they better be ready to finish it regardless.

Sounds like the problem was dealt with perfectly, and I'll second that 11, but I'm partial to tangs inline with spines, I'm not all that big on canted handles.
 
Just learn some sniper skills and how to kill a man with your bare hands. Should cover it.
 
Back when i was in school if you had a problem with someone or you were being bullied you fought it out. win or lose you fought and you gained respect as long as you didn't back down. Kudos to your son for Manning up lol, no go buy him a knife!
 
Your son did the right thing, I'd probably be up in the office giving the faculty hell, gotta stand up to those bullies too.

His your son so your call but if it was me I would be careful what message it would be giving him by giving him a knife right after an incident like this. Just sayin................all kids are different.
 
EDU, if he's mature enough to have any knife, then he won't have a problem. But not my kid so I don't know, I still believe he did the right thing and your doing the right thing Major.

My thoughts exactly, good on him, and he may well deserve a knife- still I'd go slow....just my unsolicited 0.5 cent

Schools suck nowadays. For us, we have a mandatory suspension of at least 3 days for being involved in combat with another student. For whatever reason. As long as we exchange blows, anyone involved will get suspended. If that guy's beating up another person, we can't help unless we wish to get suspended too. It's messed up. And I mean help the person being beat up, not help beat him up. Although I've decided that I'll take the suspension if it comes to it.

Here is my take on it... The school has a zero tolerance policy for fighting and that is their policy. The thing that you need to communicate to them is that you have a zero tolerance policy for violence and threats of violence toward your child. Tell them if problems between your child and the bully continue. The way that they will find out about it will be through your lawyer. I second the martial arts suggestion. Read about chess boxing and find the closest approximation to it that you can. I was a prime candidate for bullying at his age one of the things that really helped me was the ability to stay super calm, bide my time and make my punches ( or rather school book strikes) count.

Cheers man. The slap on the wrist you get will mean a lot less negatively to you than the impact of you stepping in will mean positively to the person you jump in to defend. This is the mindset that I hope everyone has when my daughter eventually goes to school (even though I will be standing right outside of school grounds with a taser and a shotgun :D).
