Bummer- What do I do now?

I agree with Chuck, fix it. Did you peen or glue the pins? I use ivory often and peen all my pins but never seen cracks like that. They may be a little close to the edge. Or do more hand sanding first before going to the buffer. Heat can be a real killer.
It's a great looking knife and deserves a crack free handle.

I will make it a third. Take the scales off and make a new handle. You will feel better about the knife. I agree with Mike, heat could be the culprit. Good looking blade.

Thanks Mike and Chuck. I figured that's what I would hear. I glued the pins and sanded with 340 grit before buffing. I think I'll use micarta next time.

Do the fix ! That as well will give you confidence in what you can do by sticking it out until it really is finished. If you have to force your pins to go through or even peening you are going to crack any type of handle mnaterial. Glue the pins in or better yet go to corby types. Frank

William,
Nice knife. I think you got your answer on your initial query. What caught my eye however was what appears to be a very deep hollow in the grind. It's something I'm about to try (with some trepidation). If you don't mind me asking, how wide is the knife (spine to edge), stock thickness and what size wheel did you use? I have 1" wide stock, 1/4" thick, but only a 6" wheel. Stock thickness is to make an integral but I'm concerned about grinding through the blade.

Kwakn,
Thank you , and yes I did get my answer as I expected. You always get good advice from the guys on BF
and lots of encouragement. I use Aldo's ground 440c, 3/16 thick. Spine to edge is 1". Tip to guard is 4".
8" o/a. I use an 8" wheel.

Practice on cheap steel first.

Thanks. Yes..practice. Been doin' that. Wood mock ups, cheap steel, still don't have the 'touch' yet...
