Without going into to much detail, as I've been in contact with spyderco warranty and the knife is on its way back, my bg42/cf millie and I had an incident this morning. I'm not one of the "i like to pry really hard with my folders" types so this surprised me, especially given the medium I was prying(cardboard box). I'm sure that the situation will be resolved in a positive way for everyone, so lets not have everyone lambaste me about posting about this.

Cell phone pic, better pics to come:

I'm not gonna Lambaste you but I would like to caution you about using your Mili as a diving board!:p:D

I'm sorry, it's the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic. BOING,BOING.....!

I'm sure you'll have a replacement for it soon. ;)

That is the result of prying a cardboard box:eek: I was close to pulling the trigger on one of those, but I think I will continue to use my Endura in VG-10. Something to be said for smaller opening holes I guess. Hope you get everything sorted out with Spyderco.

I'd like to see better pics. Pics of the "cardboard"box too. I'm not buying it so far. Joe

Hi Blondie,

Thanx much for sending the knife back to us. We really like the opportunity to put failures through our lab. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm sure Customer Service will take good care of you.

We've had no problems with the BG model, even after considerable useage, and very few Military's broken in general, so I would guess your problem to be unique. I'm curious myself as to what might have failed..

Hi IUKE,

We've been making knives with 14mm opening holes for many years with no probs. We've not found the size of the hole to be as important as the amount of steel in the cross section.

here are the pics i promised everyone. I really am grateful for the immediate help I got from customer service and from Sal himself. Spyderco really is my favorite production knife company.

also thanks to everyone for the supportive responses

Here are the pics I promised earlier, and for the curious or skeptical I was prying open a case of fiocchi .22 ammo at work, which had had its staples removed already but was still glued shut.

I have two BG42 millies, plus about 6 other BG knives and it's inconcieveable that would happen in a non abusive situatution. That doesn't mean it didn't happen exactly as you say but really, The tip usually goes and not the whole blade.

BTW, you know that prying is specifically warned against and considered abusive. If it's replaced under warranty it's simply because Sal and Spyderco are good people. They have no obligation to.

Good luck. Joe

just glue and cardboard, mixed with some wrist pressure only. had done it many other times with the same knife, along with my delica and d'allara, even zdpcaly3.

If spyderco chooses not to replace it on warranty then i'll gladly pay for another blade, even if it has to be s30v.

Sorry that happened.

To avoid prying with my knives, I recently ordered a 3" keychain pry bar from www.countycomm.com U.S.-made, D9 steel.

I'll let you know what I think after I get it.

I've also been known to carry a 6" pry bar. No, I'm not a criminal! ;)

Peter Atwood also makes the "Prybaby."

I've never seen any knife snap like that before. I've seen tons of broken tips, but that is just plain bizarre.

I actually said "Damn!" out loud when I first saw the pic.
