Bura WWII with False Edge: Cool Mod or Barbaric Mutilation?

I have been using this "beater" khuk to cut large amounts of plastic sheeting and seawall filter-weave cloth. Piercing materials is not a khukuri strong suit... usually. While sharpening, I had a "what if" moment and ground a false edge on a throwaway WC khuk. It came out nice, so I did this to a hill walnut handled villager WWII:

Like it or hate it, it pierces things a lot better.

and it was scratched and fuggly to begin with:

Overall lines are barely affected, but for the better:

Swamp Rat puts a "penetrator" point on some models... it's just basically a tiny false edge. Dan did a wicked beautiful false edge khuk for somebody... I remember the pix. And the Movie Model is a dramatic looking khuk with totally different dynamics. I was shooting for a little of that.

So. Cool mod or ruined khuk? Whaddya think?

Well, the way I see it, is that it's your kukri, so whatever you decide to do to it is your business. If you're happy with the outcome, then great. It's not like you tried to put some huge clip point on it or anything. You said it works well. So IMHO

Thanks, John. But a guard would be sacriledge.

Hm, one neutral and one thumb up.

I didn't grind a long false edge. Can always take away metal, can't put back. This is like, 3/4".

As you say, the change is kind of hard to see anyway, and if it works better for you, why not?

Hi Ad Astra,

You wanted to have the benefit of the back-cut that Bowie users so love to have in their shotlockers... GREAT IDEA!!! Add to that the thrust, something many Khukuri users discount... EVEN BETTER IDEA!!!

Personally, if canting the blade 90 degrees isn't to tough, the Khukuri thrusts extremely well. If you don't want to think about canting the blade, raise the tip of the blade half the width of the blade's belly. This should put you right on target with a lunging thrust, or just an unextended thrust.

Having the ability to thrust, cut, and back-cut, is the best of all possible worlds in knife fighting... Only a little additonal "care" in execution is necessary with your modified weapon.

TWO THUMBS UP!!!

Keep those great ideas coming!!!

P.S. I've lived by these simple doctrines for years, and for me, they work...

"If it's practical, it's tactical..." Also, "Prepare and train for the worst- if it doesn't happen, you can be pleasantly surprised..." cfl

Yes. :D Somewhere in the middle. If it works great I'd extend the "false edge" like some of the pseudo Bowies. It might make it look less Vietnam Tomahawk and a little more like other "accepted" knives (M-7 bayonet,Spyderco Police, CS Recon Scout). Form follows function, but both together is great.

"If it's stupid but works it's not stupid."

Tx. Wanted to get more opinions before considering removing any more metal.

Pointy khuks appeal to me, Malla, Pachthar, even the new LYS is pretty pointy.

Wouldn't do this to a lot of models... BGRS, for example. It would serve no purpose in a dedicated wood chopper. But for an all-arounder, this adds a little bit of utility. Maybe a JKM next.

and no, Dave, I won't tell Bura. :D

Hehehehe... :D I did the same thing to my Busse EBM.
The original point was such that it appeared you would have to hammer the blade into whatever you were trying to pierce, not anymore. :D
I've thought about doing the same with a khuk but haven't really had the need as I don't thrust much with my khuks.
If I had the need I'd do the same as what you have Mike and wouldn't look back, form follers function.;) :D

I don't actually thrust near as much as I'd like or used to...

I like it. And if it works, what does it matter if I like it or not anyway? ;)
My next-door neighbor's opinion doesn't matter. As many posts as you have on the subject, YOUR opinion counts. Thanks for helping me decide if I wrecked a khuk or improved it.

If the collective opinion was I had ruined it, I could always have re-ground it into a traditional 15" chiruwa BAS. :D

Its a practical mod and is useful. That is what counts. If it works to extend the edge then I'd do it. Good for you Ad.

I'm in the "If it works for you" camp.

I can imagine myself modding the kuk in that manner.

(P.S. thats a thumbs up)

I say that as long as the modification helps your WWII perform its designated tasks and it doesn't make the point significantly weaker structurally its a cool mod. Now if you had circumsized the cho, that would have been a barbaric mutilation. :barf: ;)
