Burl Hunting 101

How many boon and crocket points was that burl? Looks like it might have been a trophy!
Great hunting vid guys.

...and thanks for showing the field dressed burl. Not too bloody :D

That's more fun than the law allows {g} BTW, what brand 45-70 was that? I saw external hammer and thought Rolling Block, but could be Handi rifle? I like 45-70s - I've got a couple, an old Trapdoor and a rolling Block. Cast bullets are the only way to go.

Yup it's a falling block. It belongs to DEllis.....

We cut the burl into slabs and coated them with wood glue to slow the drying and hopefully reduce checking. After many months of drying they will get cut up on a bandsaw and sent for stabilizing.

Looks like a lot of fun.
I knew I built this rifle for somthing. Burl hunting I love it

This is the round it shoots, 1150gr paper patched lead bullet. Loaded from 2000-2300fps.

Problem is I don't think most people would want to shoot it till the burl fell of the tree.

JT, do you really mean 1150 grain lead cast bullet at 2,000 fps???? That's over 2 oz of lead!!! 500 grain of lead at 1,000 fps is about all I want very many of. What caliber/brass is that? it's a BFR for sure. I've shot a .500 S&W, but that brass looks larger than that! I've not shot the 45-70 BFR, and would want it loaded down for sure.

I designed the gun from scratch and machined all the parts. It's a .700 cal rifle and the case is Made from 50bmg brass and is 3" long. It's loaded with 200gr of powder.

Jt, That's a really cool rifle although I would not want to sight it in. I use a .338-06 and a .300 Weatherby on most everything. You must have some scary big squirrels up there in Washington!!!! Larry

Did I see you shooting that thing on youtube a yr or so ago? That's just more power than I can imagine! Is that a NFA item?

I just can't imagine shooting that..... not even in my "young 'n dumb" years!

That 700 cal definitely would have got the burl down with less shots, provided the shooter wasn't flinching & missing!
I just watched the video of it being fired. Very impressive.

Dang I knew there was an easier way than the old fashioned way. Even had a pistola. Never occurred to shoot the burl off the tree.

Course might of been an exercise in futility, bigger burl and much smaller gun.

I just found JT's video on shooting that rifle - WOW!!!!

now I'd like to see a video on details of rifle itself.

The 45-70 is a falling block of my own design, built from scratch from a block of 4140 prehard. Green mountain octagon barrel. 22" long. It is my main hunting tool of choice. 3 deer and a mountain goat with it so far.......and an assist on the birch burl:p

I should make it clear that we were in a remote area with a good backstop behind the burl(hillside) so it was safe, we were not shooting indiscriminately up in the air. The chainsaw works faster if you can reach the burl, but even a 20 foot extension ladder would have been too short to retrieve this one.
Darcy:)
