So I picked up a nice set of redwood burl scales and upon receiving them I noticed they have some inclusions, a few even go all the way through..Are they useless or is there a way to save them?? They are professionally stabilized if that makes any difference! thanks Dan

Inclusions are very common in burl. Some people leave them alone and others fill them with CA glue and finish as normal. Both practices are accepted so I guess its a matter of personal preference. Personally, unles the inclusions is exceptionally large I just leave them unless the customer requests them to be filled.

Thanks Darrin..I was hoping that was the case..I figured since I am going to use g10 liners Its not like there is a threat of moisture sitting against the tang or anything of that nature!

There's no getting around it, burls have inclusions, even when professionally stabilized (which is the only way to go, in my opinion). I'm in the "fill 'em in with CA" camp, but I agree that's not always necessary.

Also for larger inclusions I like to add some black pigment to a good thin epoxy(West System 3) and tape off one side and fill the inclusion.Usually turns out looking good .

Sanding dust from the same material can help the fix blend in, too.
