I love macro photography, but was never good at managing the depth of field. Always wanted to mess around with stacking macros for depth.

Would be interesting to up the grit on the sanding to get rid of the scratches. If I recall correctly, they usually only go to 600 or so. Would be neat to take it to about 2000. Since the finish is mineral oil, I'd think there would be little issue although I took my runt inspired knife's burl to 1200 and it's got a strange high pitched sound when you handle it gently.

I like the right side of the top picture, you can see all the fibers.
I'm fascinated by the unknown method of getting the different fibers to propogate the dye the way they do.

Neato Pics Lavawood! Thanks for posting them!

great pics lavawood! man that's not bad a picture quality from a 3.2 MP camera; I love how macro shots allow you to look at objects so differently from how your eyes perceive them.

Meet Burl Macro, he's watching you!

Maybe someone can explain this:
Is this an actual crystaline deposit in the wood like a geode
Or is it resin from stabilization trapped in a void

a few shots off the new 100mm macro.
This is all the light I could muster indoors, I'm hoping for much better results in the sun.
imgur is reducing the image from 10 mb to about 1 and quite a bit is lost.
