Just got back from my local woodcraft store with a big pile of burl, now i need to decide if it's worth sending the best pieces of this out to get stabilized or whatnot. The big square is maple and 7x7x3.5 the smaller ones are all .75x.75 and vary in length from 5 to 11 inches. they were cut to be 'pen blanks' but they had 2 big bags of them for 9 bucks each so i picked them up to use for pen knives / mini wooden sheath pocket knives like I've made a couple of before. That and I want to make a few long thin letter openers with slender round handles, so these looked perfect.

Most of these small pieces seem too porous to use without stabilizing, if i want to get them clear stabilized is WSSI the best bet?

Err it helps if i put the pictures in here

Stabilize at least the big piece and any of the small ones you actually expect to use on knives. Remember that wood frequently warps at least a little when stabilized so you probably won't get a full .75x.75 out of those pen blanks.

Most important. Ensure that it's less than 10% moisture before you send it off.

Hey Justin,

Remember you pay by the pound (finished weight). So make sure you send stuff you really want. I sent in 6 lbs of koa a while back and got 10 pounds back. At the time I think it was $13+ per pound, thus I spent about $150 (including shipping there and back).

All the best, Phil

Have IG do a piece of the 3/4 square stuff. Have Mike at WSSI do the whole block of maple burl. Then you can slice off the sizes you want.
