Hey everybody.....

This one is really for Tom Gannon.....His metal to metal thread got me to thinking about the possible need to go knife to metal......55 gallon drums are ubiquitous in the military arena and they have about the same thickness as auto bodies for potential rescue scenarios.....Sooooo a legit target for the BK-2........The old burn barrel at the shop literally collapsed and so Moose and I took a fresh one and did the mods with a BK-2 and a store bought maul(the mauls I use for fieldcraft stuff just did not have enough heft).....

The barrel head took several moderate blows before we got penetration. I wanted to have a second drain hole which I opened up at the side

We checked for edge damage....No chipping and very little edge roll...

Then I opened up a couple of breathing holes in the side

A final check for edge damage showed a small area of rolled edge...Actually a slight peening is a more accurate description....No chipping to speak of....Nothing a minute with a stone wont bring back to shaving sharp

It still would make marginal shavings.....

So another thanks to brother Gannon......Good time with the Moose and good little test for the BK-2.....

All Best.....

Further reason to buy one for the car, one for the house, one for the backpack, one for the tool box...:):)

Sheesh. Are you really gonna make me buy another one...? Well, I guess I COULD use another...

Excellent testing, its good to know the BK2 can stand up to anything.....

Holy smokes! I hope never to do that sort of stuff with my BK2 but it's kind of cool to know I can.

Looks like that BK-2 did just as good or better a job as my beater ESEE-5.

My 5 took more edge damage though. Looks like either one is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty.

i remember that bbq pit. it was one thick piece of metal.

i just ordered a 5, looks like i might need to start looking into a BK-2 also.

Thanks Ethan for sharing your results with the BK2.I feel very
good carrying a capable knife,like the BK2!

Thanks for the pics Ethan.

I had been on the fence about getting my first Becker. This just sent me straight over to Tomar's site and I bought one.

What a tank!!!

Just a note from the guy behind the camera, that was a new steel drum, no rust, not degenerated metal on that thing. Ethan really had to wail on that mallet to get through the bottom of that thing. I mean really, really had to wail on it.

He had to get the bottom dented inward first, because it kept bouning the blade back and didn't punch through. The sides, it went through like butter, no problems at all there, but if you have ever seen those heavy duty drums like that, the bottom is always thicker, I guess for wear and tear.

It was a badass test, and for only a quarter inch of the blade edge to MILDLY ROLL, and not chip out, that's hot. When I say roll, you have to look at in the right light, or else you won't even see it.

Becker's are tough, alot tougher than a steel drum. Fell free to quote that, if you wish.

HEY Shotgunner....

Thanks for the post and pix from the "other side".....Nice to know that my other favorite knives are up to the task.....

55 gallon drums are a basic building block of mature life forms.....Just do not forget the Norton stone......

BTW I am mildly irritated that your drum project IS more creative than mine....LOL.....I guess this means I get to buy the first beer at BLADE....Oh Well.......

All Best.....

I can see the headlines: "Ethan Becker of BK&T was awarded a Guinness award for creating the world's largest P-38 can opener."
