Burned during tempering - how to re-temper?

Hey all,

I may have made my blades too soft by tempering at just over 500F for two hours, then realizing my mistake and tempering at 425F for the next two hours. I'm using 1084 steel and an electric oven; the second round I used a more accurate electronic thermometer.

If I think the blade is too soft, how would I go about re-tempering? Do I have to start over from normalization to annealing to hardening to tempering, or can I just harden and temper again?

Thanks

According to Kevin's website 500˚ should put you in the 55-56HRC range. Not unusable for a knife.

Put some steel in the oven with it.

Don't have direct line of sight between elements and blade.

Radiant heat may overheat it.

At the very least a pair of cookie sheets
one on the shelf below, one on the shelf above.

What temperature did you end up tempering at? I would start at 400, and test the blade for performance. You can always raise the temperature on the next temper if you want it a bit softer.
