Burner Flare Getting Red Hot?

Hey guys,

I recently finished setting up and did my first go at forging yesterday. I'm planning on making a big thread on it later, but I'm at work and can't take pictures yet. I'm using a JF #1 seen here.

Anyway, my concern is that my burner flare is getting bright red hot. Is this normal? I've read that letting the burner itself get this hot is A) bad for the flare over time and B) can cause early ignition up in the tube, messing with the flame characteristics.

I'm not sure how to fix it if it needs fixing. I'll snap a picture of my forge later, but the burner is mounted an inch up inside of 2" of wool, it isn't mounted at top dead center, and I'm using a fairly low PSI.

Please advise!

The end will get red.

Just a note - It should not be sticking out inside the forge. It should be flush with the insulation, or slightly recessed.

That's what I was trying to describe originally; the flare is recessed 1" inside 2" of wool.

Thanks for setting my mind at ease.

Now, I can't see the end of my burner because of the recess, but I built up some refractory cement to somewhat make an extended flare and it's roughly the same diameter as the inside of the burner.. Now the burner "bottoms out" on the lip I created. I read that in a few places (can't remember where) and i used the idea, doesn't necessarily make it right. Someone correct me if that is a bad thing lol.

I have the same burner as you and it seems to be going strong without a problem, though. I don't take my forge to welding heat either usually just low psi to heat treat.

Justin
