Burner problems and brain cork

You would think with the amount of time I've been forging I would have figured out this problem years ago. Looking back in time I actually did when I switched from coal to propane. (reason for brain cork) When I first made the switch I was using a weed burner and found it would work better outside the forge but didn't understand why till this morning. I've been using the middle burner in the picture of this link: http://www.hybridburners.com/ for several months now. It seemed once the forge got good and hot the burner would start having problems like it wasn't getting enough gas or air. This morning I took the burner out when it started to puke and as soon as the tip cooled off it ran just fine. I now have the burner about 1/2" outside the forge body and it works great and also have a full range of adjustment and find for normal forging temps I can run at 2 pounds pressure where I had to be at 5 or 6 pounds once it started to puke.
