Burning the Midnight Federal Oil?

I have a hard time sleeping, because my mind doesn't really shut off anymore. Always thinking through problems and potential solutions. I'll often wake up with a ready answer, or a potential answer, demanding immediate documentation. A problem or an issue comes by, I snap it up by reflex and then work until it's solved.

I've known a few people like you, generally they don't do well in retirement. One guy I knew, an entomologist, even kept coming back in to work after he had retired to do research. Wasn't getting paid for it, just couldn't stop. When he got too old for that he only lasted a couple of more years.

What you need to do is find yourself a hobby or two, things that will occupy both mind and body. I have a few. People with things to interest them, outside of work, generally do much better after retirement.

Well. Surprise, surprise.

Apparently, your old Uncle OldPhysics has been deemed to be "working too hard," "trying to solve everyone's problems," and "pushing too hard, too fast."

The upshot? Your federal government has ordered me to "relax." Literally ... ordered.

I'm not entirely sure what they mean by this, and I am confused to hear the federal government asking for "less."

The upshot is, no week-end and night-time work for Uncle for quite some time. Fewer exhausting "little trips." Probably a little more "preventive medicine."

Guess I really will be making it to Blade this year.

[Our tax dollars. At work ... but not too hard.]

SooooooooooWEET!!

Mebbe you can make it to PA. for that GTG, too!?? Also, more time to relax, swing some INFI and other fun activities, and believe it or not, you might have some new/fresh great ideas pop just by not overthinking once in a while! ;) :D:thumbup: Sometimes the 'simple' solutions are lost in the complicated thought process, ya know? :)

OP glad to see the people you work for see the value that you are to us. Hopefully I will see you at Blade this year again.

OP, you sound like my dad. He has been working at the same college for longer than I have been alive. 35 years I think. He has been doing two administrators jobs for more than a decade, and had three jobs before that. He worked as the athletic director, and vice president of student services as well. There were two VP's of student services. One retired, and they hired a young, fresh graduate to fill the empty position. They started her out at more pay than my dad was making after 20 years there. Then, after she turned out to be a moron, they made my dad fire her. He took over her position temporarily....until a suitable replacement could be found. He finally got rid of the athletic director position, but is still doing both VP jobs more than a decade later. They keep telling him when ever it gets to be too much, he can quit one, and they will finally hire some one. He does not get paid double, but has been doing more than double work for all this time. I guess it is a pride.

My father in law works more hours than anyone I know. He works two full time computer programming jobs. One for American Express, where he has been for his whole career, and another business within walking distance from his house. He works his part time job some times 60 hours in a week. He only sleeps a few hours a night. He does this because of enormous financial pressure, but I am sure he is loosing years and years if not decades of his life. He can literally fall asleep anywhere instantly. On the floor, on the bus.

There is a saying that "no man on his deathbed ever wished he had spent more time at the office". I wonder. The best job you could have is one you really like doing, and you might be surprised what job that is, for some people. The job can be their hobby too.

I don't think it shortens life, not if they enjoy it. What it does shorten is family life. No time for kids? What are they really working for?

There are a lot of good points above. I'm going to use this "free time" to consider them.

I think I really shouldn't go on the way I've been going. For one thing, I don't have another 40+ years in me. And maybe I should resurrect an old hobby or even two.

I've no intention of being found dead at my desk.;)

Jamie,

Travel, man. I'm sure you've traveled extensively in your days, but now might be a good time to go out and just lounge.

Of all the places I've been in the world, the two most enjoyable and relaxing have been:

Hilo, on the big island of Hawaii. What an amazing place with a tropical climate and some of the most friendly people, amazing geography, great natural vegetation (mangos, pineapples, guava, carambola, macadamia nuts, etc...) I've ever experienced.

And

The mountains of Mid-western Puerto Rico. In my father's town of San Sebastian there is this amazing little resort tucked into the mountains called "La Hacienda del Jibarito." It's a natural preserve with a small, but beautiful hotel and some private lodges on a coffee plantation. All the food served is grown, picked, slaughtered and prepared on the preserve, and it's hidden away so that you could be there a few days and feel like you're In your own private paradise.

I say, snatch Mrs. Homeseller, board a and for San Juan, hit some of the shops in Old San Juan, find a good restaurant, stay an evening in the Courtyard Marriot in Carolina, then rent a car the next day and visit El Yunque, where you can explore the rainforest and go swimming at the bottom of the waterfall (La Mina), stay anothet night at the hotel, eat a fantastic steak on the deck overlooking the ocean, then wake up the next day and head through the mountains to El Jibarito.

Or...you could stay in Guajataca, which is close to a great little seaside town called Isabella (yes, my little princess' namesake) where there is a rainforest and one of the planets 3 bioluminescent bays, (two are in PR) and sleep listening to the ocean crash against the rocks.

You need to take some time to remind yourself why you've worked so hard your entire life, brother.

And if you do go to PR and come through Miami, stick around here for a day. We have a huge, comfortable couch, and will cook you up something lovely. We don't have much, but what we do have, we will make available for you and yours gladly. :)

You are a good and kind man.

Someday, I will definitely darken your door.:)

That's a good plan, travel, broadens the mind. :)

I've done a bit of it and, if you can do it in a relaxed way, it really helps you wind down and get your head together.

Come to Oz, let me show you my back yard, I'll show you where the Man From Snowy River rode. Maybe I can even sweep out a corner of the shed for you. ;)

Go north and see the almost deserted tropical beaches, see the rainforests, see the mind blowing scenery of Kakadu. See the Currawongs and wake up in the morning to the call of the Kookaburras.

Do it, you know you want to. :D

OP, you know my door is always open to you and yours. Whatever you do, I wish you well and lots of adventure.

At least you'll be around more. THe knife community is much calmer when you're around.

Darn it!! That's tempting. And I've even bunked in sheds before.

Eventually, I will drop by. It will take some time ... and coordination.

I "might have" been out there before.;)

I've actually travelled a ridiculously large amount. But almost always for work. As a result, I've had multiple versions of every inoculation ever devised by man. Ouch.

Lycosa: sadly, my passions primarily revolve around my professional life. And there is the problem!

Hmm. I don't know. I've worked ... just worked ... and rather intensely for over 40 years now. I don't know if I'm good for anything else, really.

Still, the suggestion is probably a good one. I'll give it a try. Even if I can never "retire," surely I can find a different way to contribute ... at a different pace.

As to being "let go" -- never happen.:) They just don't want to burn me out prematurely. They have uses for me ... and for people like me ... that will never, ever end.:o And to be honest, I suppose I also have "uses" for them -- what would I do with myself, really, without those thorny problems to solve?

Sometimes, that single thought makes me sweat.

You can't retire. :(This nation will go to hell in a hand basket once your generation turns over the keys to x's and y's. I have so many stories I could tell you about the difference and I'm one of the young Xers but have a few older working for me and been around owning my own business since 15.

Hope all is well or gets well with you for our sake. :D

OP,

"Bring" you and the Mrs. to my neck of the woods...Come to Ohio:D:D

I will cook you a AWESOME dinner:thumbup::thumbup:

and have some scotch with the janitor:thumbup::thumbup: well....if he is sober enough...LOL:D:D

Now there is a wonderful invitation.

Don't be too surprised if we do drag ourselves by one day.

Any sign of oldest daughter's invitation yet?? I guess I'm a terrible Dad as I don't really know what's happening with all that. I do, however, know the rough size of the hole it's going to blow in my wallet.
