Burnt stag?

So I am going to try to make some burnt stag scales for a slipjoint I'm in the process of, and was wondering what/if I should use to seal them afterwards? Also what compound should I use to buff them out? I was going to use a loose muslin wheel. To burn it I am going to use a butane torch cigar lighter after they're on the knife.

If you get it to hot the scales will warp and the epoxy(assuming you use epoxy) will degrade and let go. But, you likely know that. Just be careful.

Why not color the stag, rather than burning it? Burning looks fake and amateurish in my opinion.
Potassium permanganate or leather dyes can be used to color stag.
