"Velvet Touch" Two Wheel Belt Grinders Model 960-272, Knifemakers Edge

I was just wondering on everyone's thoughts and experience with this machine, any dislikes?

I love mine. Its ran every day for over 10 years now. Its my main grinder. I wish it were variable speed though because I cant use my 10" wheel it turns so fast.

I have one with variable speed on it. I used it for 2 years with fixed speed. It's a great machine, I've used (in other people's shops) a Coote, Grizzly, Wilton Square Wheel and a custom machine that is hard to describe and the Burr King is hands down the best machine I've ever used. I have no qualms about buying another one.

All your tooling changes are made with a allen wrench, there are only 2 sizes on the machine so it helps trying to figure stuff out. It's sturdy and pretty simple to figure out.

The only dislike I have is that I don't have the small wheel attachment for it. ;)

I have owned one for about 4 years, variable speed with 10 inch wheel.

One downside for me is that its not as easy to flatten steel on the platen compared to a KMG or Bader where you can hold the steel above the platen without the belt getting in the way.......To do the same on the Burrking I need a magnet to hold it flush against the platen.

I use a Bader 3 for all my tooling changes...fast and simple.

The Burrking is a great machine, runs well, but if I could only have one grinder in my shop, it would be a variable speed KMG or Bader for the ease of changing tooling arms and the position of the platen.

The KMG does have a better and much longer platen but it has small metal wheels at the top and bottom of the platen. The BK has rubber wheels and the lower one is a 5" also. I love that one for small hollow grinding on double edged knives. I have the small wheel attachment but rarely use it anymore since I bought the foredom and dremels.

Kevin, If you get a knife makers attachment for your burr king you will have the same basic grinding set up as the platen on the kmg and bader. It still won't be any easier to completely change setups but you would only need to to do hollow grinding with the ten inch wheel. Also if you or anyone else decides to get the knifemakers attachment get the one for a Hardcore grinder. same basic design but an adjustible platten and more ridgid constuction.

Actually If I had to buy another grinder I would buy the KMG and order the bells and whistles that I like. I want one with a flat platen and a 5" rubber wheel on the bottom and 2" rubber wheel on top. It would need to be variable speed and need hollow grinding wheels: 6" 8" and 14"

Thats the great thing with the Rob is he will make you the grinder of your dreams at affordable prices.

My bottom line: My next grinder will be a KMG

I have the hardcore knifemakers attachment on mine. There is a lot to be said for the adjustable platen.

Burr King and Hardcore are pretty much the same grinder although the flat grinding attachment for the Hardcore was pretty special. Neither will survive a fire. I've had a KMG for a couple years now and its done everything I have asked of it and the cost was less than half of the Hardcore.

I have the VS Burr-King as well and I agree hands down the smoothest machine I have ever used. It's quiet and runs and tracks perfectly. Dave:)
