hello folks,
as an avid troller i am about to enbark on a camping trip with some friends.
we all know nothing about it of course, so i ask you where can i catch a bus/train and land within walking distance for a bunch of beginners wishing to set up and hike away and return being able to walk to someplace that has food and can return to camp????

leaving nyc in the middle of september.

thank you all, for everything that you post, it inspires me.

I know nothing about back east for this, but out here there are several towns within a mile or three of the PCT, so municipal bus service, greyhound, and amtrak are all easy.

For you you might want to see if something similar is possible for the appalachian trail.

wow, thank you i hope someone might be of help.
the appalacin trail would be on top of the list by far.

I'm sure that you can catch a bus north to Adirondack State Park. If you can get to Lake Placid or Keene Valley, you'll be in the heart of the park and the High Peaks area. LOTS of trails and peaks within reach and there's very little chance of getting lost and/or too far over your head if you use a bit of common sense. September in the Adirondacks is great. The bugs are much less of a problem and the heat is not much of a problem, especially at night. Be sure to rent a food canister so bears can't get your food. They're required now in the park I believe. Have fun wherever you go.

In the past we took the bus from Port Authority to Bear Mountain. Roughly an hour ride.
Walked back into the woods and fished for a few days then back to the Bear Mountain Inn for food & drinks and the bus ride home.
There used to be a boat called the Dayliner, that made the trip up the Hudson to Bear Mountain.
I'm sure a search would get you the rules & regs on camping there as well as a map or two.
The maps should not be left out.

I used to do Greyhound trips so that I could go out and back without having to get back to a vehicle to get home. Some of the highway bus stops here are flag stops, where the bus stops if there's someone there (like a city transit stop). I would use one of them for pickup, and ask the driver to let me off wherever I was starting the trip.

I don't know if it would work for you there, but it's doable for sure. I was a kid at the time, but I would get into sort of a vagabond mindset. It takes a bit more planning, but it was fun.

Remember to share your plans with someone, just in case;)

thanks for all the info., i will look into it.
apologies i dont know how to do the copy and paste stuff, dont know how to do the pics as well, guess i will have to get one of the kids for that.

troller...supposed to be lurker but sounded right when i wrote it.
