Bush pigs

As a property owner, I have to say I dont allow anyone to fish on my land other than friends, and family. At least twice a year, I run into a trespasser who is willing to brandish a gun, or knife when i approach them, and let them know that the bobwire, and no trespassing signs are pretty good features to let then know they are some place they shouldnt be. I spent almost 10 grand to bobwire 600 acres to keep my family safe from these people. Its sad that I have to make sure I grab an assault rifle, and load it in my side by side before telling someone they are trespassing. Even with that said I find tons of trash left by those that I didnt see on the property.

Where do you live? If someone is brandishing a gun anywhere on my property.... Why ask anything?

I have birch trees in my yard. I can tell you with experience that you can pull small pieces off without doing any damage. You don't need much anyway. A few inches can usually be pulled off and then using your blade, scrape/scuff the back to create a small lump of shavings. If done correctly they will still be attached to the bark which is useful for windy conditions. This will catch a spark easily. Once it flames turn it sideways to catch the rest of the bark. Place it in your nesting material and then standard fire building from there. A piece as large as the picture is completely unnecessary. My trees for instance can have some bark harvested without exposing any of the inner meat of the tree.

You can use birch bark for other things than firestarting, for example bowls, cups, or even canoes.

It's not just immigrants that treat the planet like their personal garbage can. There are plenty of self entitled American citizens who act that way as well... You ever see what a group of young white kids do when they're out and about? Long story short, has anyone tried respectfully explaining that this shit is not tolerated? When you take a holier than thou attitude with people, sometimes the end result is less than desirable.

Excellent points. I purposely left out ethnicity in the post, but the immigrant reference is still targeting. And yes, absolutely, I've come across many, many ''party'' spots that look like rural dumps created by the local kids. And it takes far more diplomacy and balls to approach someone face to face and explain what their garbage is offensive to me. I have the option of speaking up, cleaning up, or shutting up. I will have to use discretion.

You are correct. I was referring more towards the typical outdoors adventure. When you wouldn't need to craft your own cups and bowls, etc. I personally will only use my own birch or on a friends land when stripping that much bark for practice scenarios.

Often the hardest thing to do is speak civilly and respectfully to people who haven't earned either nicety. I've found more often than not, when I've tried to respectfully make my case, the outcome was rather positive. This doesn't mean being stupid and to not expect backlash, that's why it's always easier to do so with a knife in tow ;)

It looks like a really nice area. Its a shame that people are disrespectful and are willing to just leave their trash and not care.

You'd be amazed at how well a .30 caliber Browning M1919 keeps people civil. :D

Hey upnorth. If you dont mind me asking, where do you live? Also what immigrants would you be talking about?

Go to far west texas and you will see their trash and piss bottles all over the place. I think we as Americans have gotten better at keeping our country clean, I know I have for sure. I just wish the everyone else would follow!

North central Saskatchewan, Canuckia. Recently there has been an influx of immigrants. Filipinos, East Indians and ................ The first two groups seen like nice enough folks, hard working, clean living etc. The last group seems more ethnocentric and standoffish. These are the ones I see along the river cooking up fish and tossing their crap everywhere. When I first started to bump into them I'd nod, smile and ask what they caught. I got the drift pretty quickly that they wanted to be left alone.

My brother in law is from Canada, Cameran. Do you know him?
My opinion is for the most part people are all the same no matter where they are from and about 10% aren't worth shit. Some are nice, hard working, good people. Some aren't.

I think your percentage is very low.

Around here it's usually rich kid's partying that do all the damage and dumping. Look at the riot after the hockey game here in Vancouver!!!!. Modern parenting, Gotta love it!!!!!!.

Almost everywhere I go in the semi remote local area I encounter garbage by the ton .I have noticed that my generation(I`m 34) and younger have no understanding of the impact they have on anything they will shoot/catch as many of anything as they can get away with and leave garbage everywhere they go like they exhale trash.
I hope the tree is not harmed from the bark removal as some may argue the trash can be picked up but the tree cannot be as easily be fixed.
