I usually don't go for all the mystical stuff, but Uncle Bill (Yangdu's late husband) said that we don't pick kukris, kukris pick us. In this case, I think the mystical is true.

Like the Cpl, I usually don't go for the mystical stuff but I have to admit, the ASTK-V chose me out of all the others I own.

+ 3 ...but in my case I purchased seven other Khuk's before I found "the one" which is an 18.25inch/31ounce Chiruwa Dui Chira (non standard item) by Sgt Khardka:

I picked it from a photo of many Khuk's, it just caught my eye. After some thought I decided to purchase it. Go with what appeals to your eye, you will know if its your Khuk the first time you hold it. ;)

It's interesting hearing some of you guys talking about "the one" and the tool picking you. I have to agree with that statement. I've been the same way with a multitude of things in my life (from precision rifles and handguns to knives to all sorts of equipment, especially items that your life may depend on). I definitely agree with you guys, and sometimes something just feels "right."

Unfortunately I don't have the money that I used to (plus there's too much stuff that I want to buy) so I can't keep buying khukris until I find "my khukri."

Right now I'm trying to decide whether to get the Tamang because it appeals to me so much, or the M-43, BAS or WWII which will fit my needs better.

Decisions, decisions!

Thanks for all of your help guys!

Beautiful Dui Chirra, Bruce.

I thought I'd love a DC as well, but it just felt wrong to me, so I passed it on to another. Last I heard he sent it on it's journey to find its owner as well.

You're not kidding. When I pulled my Bura CAK from its sheath it felt like it had always belonged to me, and I was just being reunited to an old friend.

Tamang! Tamang! Tamang! You are already ready to pull the trigger...:D:thumbup:

Once again, I think that we need to arrange a "khukuri lovers' convention/Swap meet" one of these days. (Preferably here in Austin. ;))

Which is why in these threads pretty much every poster will give a different answer. Narrowing it down between models you like, we can give advice on which we'd pick, but none of that means it's the right one for you.

For instance the 20" CAK I ordered, I had a lot of people on this forum and elsewhere try to talk me out of it because of its size and weight. Even the HI site tries to discourage you from buying it. Yet I heard the call, and it was the right one.

Unfortunately I don't have the money that I used to (plus there's too much stuff that I want to buy) so I can't keep buying khukris until I find "my khukri."

Here's more of that mystical stuff:
Buy the one you REALLY want. If you don't see it offered, ask Yangdu if she has one in stock. if not, she can have it made. I think I got lucky getting my "the one" on the first try because I was very honest about what I truly wanted, and didn't just go by absolute need or looks, and was willing to wait for it to be made. I bought a lot of kukris after that to be sure I had really gotten the best, and I did - for me.

Of the kukris, I'll again recommend the M43 over the others, simply because it is pointier, and more heavily curved, and as others have said, they do chop above their weight class. IMO only a same-size or larger Ang Khola will out chop it, and not by a whole lot.

Knives, like the Tamang, are another story. I guarantee it won't chop like a full-blown kukri will, but it'll probably work very well in machete/camp knife chores.
I hate to say it, but knives and swords pick their owners as well.

My Tarwar picked me, even though I prefer the looks and other aspects of the Tibetan swords, they don't feel right. The Tarwar does (I believe that's also a Bura).

My Ang Khola Bowie, felt like it was made for my hands and is superbly balanced for such a hunk of steel. It's another I can't let go.

Finally my R-10 that you see int he pics of my 20" CAK, and rides in its own sheath on the same rig, handles like a dream, and there's only one other knife I own that I can get as sharp as that one.

However, there's guys on here that hate those knives for the very reason I love them.

So, welcome aboard and enjoy the ride. ;)

+100
I too, had 4 different Kukris ( a small number, considering some of you guys!:D) when I bought a Sgt Kardka Chiruwa Ang Kola, 16+" and it was my Kuk the moment I took it outta the box. It was like it was talking to me...I have alot of knives and sharp tools...but this is my absolute favorite. I will take it to the grave. I could never part with it. I still want more Kukris, but man, I love this thing. I believe that it and I, just fit.

MY kuk, the fifth from the left.
