Bushcraft Knife - 1st Prototype Finished!

It's the trick photography...:D

See the thickness at the butt? that's how thick it is in the middle. The handle is a "tall oval" in cross-section. It definitely fills the hand, without being too much.

Dan

Dan,

Maybe it's just the pics, but that handle looks awfully thin. Can you give any measurements as far as how thick side to side the scales are at the thickest point?

Also if they are really thin would it be possible to get the knife with the scale blocks and pins glued on so one could shape the handle to fit their hand?

Dan,
That looks great. I cant wait to get mine. I have already sent you PayPal for $95 for knife and $35 for sheath. After reviewing the updates to post #1 about the bushcraft project, it looks like I still owe you $10 for shipping and 1.5% PayPal fee ($1.50) Is this correct? I really I'm excited to get my Koster Bushcraft and put her do some work. Thanks again for starting this cool project. Is the sheath going to be leather or kydex? I think kydex would rock for this project. Will the sheaths have a FireSteel loop?

I'm going to be updating the Order Tracker this week - I'll show remaining balances on the individual orders.

Hollowdweller - I used 3/16" thick micarta, and it's pretty much 3/16" at the widest part. That would make the handle appox. 0.525" thick side-to-side. I guess it's thin compared to a piece of stag....but it will certainly fit-n-fill the hand better. The oval cross-section gives you extra leverage when prying, digging, carving, etc.

Here's a pic looking down at the spine...it does make the knife handle seem thinner than it actually is...but should give you a general idea.

I've never been crazy about thick, chunky handles.

But yes, I will gladly send you a "finish at home" one with the edges finished and handle slabs flat/squared off - just need to do contouring. Can't promise a killer discount...but will accomodate.

spyken - sure thing...just add your name to the list. :D

Oh my Oh my Oh my.

I am SO glad I ordered one! Looks great! I almost wish I had ordered a natural handle rather then green! LOL

Dan, that looks awesome! I'm so glad I ordered one. About the sheaths, is Wilma making them for the Bushcraft also? I love that style. I really need to get one of hers for my nessie too.

Man. That looks great Dan! Can't wait to get mine!

Dan,

I'm used to the British style bushcraft blades and the scandi knives that they are based on which are designed for extended use.

I think the thinnest cross section on any of my other Bushcraft knives is 3/4".

If the slabs you are using are only 3/16" then I'll just have you give me one that you've already finished the handle on and see how I like it. Maybe the width of the handle top to bottom will balance out the thin scales.

Wow!! I wished I had jumped in sooner so I'd have to wait less! I'll get a check out to you today. Is that $10 s/h for each knife or $10 for 2 knives?

I knew this knife was going to be one of my best blade purchases ever and I'm so glad I jumped on it like fly on stink. Yee-haw, first batch for me.

HD - works for me. Let me know after you get it. If need-be...I can custom-make one with thicker slabs...I have some 1/4" micarta kickin' around...total thickness would be around 0.660"

Even with my kitchen knives and the Monster Nessies...the thickest I like the scales to be is 0.300" (before shaping). On the latter, that would be an overall thickness of 0.85" - which I only leave at the butt. More likely, they end up in the 0.220-0.250 thickness (per scale).

Like you said, the trade-off is a taller blade height.

But tell ya what....I'm open-minded. I think I'll make another prototype with 1/4" thick scales and see how it feels.

Maybe even do a bit more contouring.

I haven't ordered all the handle material yet...and what I have already, I can easily use elsewhere.

There's definitely time to play around with it a bit still....even if I get them all prepped this week (likely) there will still be a 2-3 week wait for heat-treat.

Lookin good. Dan, how wide is the blade? I'm guessing you're starting with 1" wide stock. Personally I like em as wide as can be and think it extends a lil more life to the knife if used & sharpened frequently.
