Well, there was beginning to be a discussion of a bushcraft knife challenge in the old camp knife contest.

A separate post for its' own exposure was only necessary to gauge how many makers would be interested in such a contest.

Thoughts?

Although it seems that most responses are in the other thread I have a HT'ed blank that I may be able to get finished. It would be my first exposure to other real knife users and would be worth it just to have one of mine in the same pic as the good makers out there!

Anything goes as long as it's... a bushie?

We need some limits and basic task pool or something to keep it from being broad.

I'm down.

We'd have to discuss what the limits would be. Get the makers, and then we can discuss what we general do with our knives in the bushcraft knife range. That could help set what the 'requirements' would be.

Might be an idea to clear this all with mod's before getting too carried away !

I don't think the mods care about another knife challenge. It won't even come close to breaking the rules and will be judged entirely on bushcraft use.

I'm in and think...

1. We should have a blade length range.
2. Leave the grinds wide open.
3. Include sheaths but no accessories like firesteels, stones, etc...

1, yes. My suggestion would be anything up to 5 inches.

2, yes.

3, yes.

4: really, some actua list of stuff would be cool. Less a matter of "tuning" the knife than forgetting something in building a new-from-scratch design.

I am glad the mods are not going to come down on this.

We've had a "Camp Knife Challenge" already... It will be difficult to make the "Bushcraft Knife Challenge" stand out. I think size will be the main difference.

I agree that the cutting edge should not exceed 5". Width and minimum blade length can be wide open.

I think making it stand out will involve the task list. And, to some extent, the users.

We talked a little bit about this with the camp knife challenge, but if one of the groups - (like tonym and bigmike and suchlike up in the frozen east. Or any other group) did a weekend of tasks, with various people assigning points to average out, it could be good.

Okay, I'm in. I agree with the 5" blade length limit. This should be fun. I already have a design in mind!

I think it would be nice to see the makers come up with a pair of knives that complement each other.

a little bit of drop point is ok. I just can't stand spear point knives.

I don't think all of them would be shaped the same. Some prefer spear points, some drop points, some straight. It is all a matter of what the maker would see fit for a bushcraft knife.

It really would depend on what the tests would consist of.
