Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

Sorry, I just saw this thread. I would be honored to beat the crap out of all of you knifemakers knives. I would be happy to throw a detailed list of duties that will be performed.

Let me know

I, personally would like for you to test them. You were actually the first person that came to mind when this came about. If the others agree, I think it would be a good idea if you could put out a list of what you would likely do with them. If the others agree, of course..

Tonym-

One thing that brings you to mind is that you've got a regular crew of guys up there and I've seen your field trip photos - having the ability to have multiple people rate various things might help. Various hand sizes, styles of work, etc.

You've also had a fair number of blades from a lot of the BF makers over the past few years, which is good, I think.

And, remember, everyone else- this is challenge number 3. No reason we won't end up having a PNW rainforest challenge later, or a "winter in the yukon" or something.

I would be happy to. However, "Bushcraft" means alot of things to different people, so I will be happy to take different ideas down, if my list is found lacking.

Once the makers get together and decide whom they want to test their knives, then we can all brainstorm on the list tasks to be performed.

I dunno if the makers should really vote on it or anything. I'm fine with anyone who steps up. Just need a "commitment date" and a "due date".

I'd suggest a new thread when you get to that point. 2-3 weeks for 'commitment' (and of course, latecomers will come in, too!) and ....

winter test? late fall? The real place for maker input is backlogs. Anything after halloween would work for me, but some makers might need a month or 6 weeks past that?

I agree with Koyote on this one. It should be who steps up, not who they want, necessarily. They may vote for people they think would favor them :p

Bushcraft is indeed a 'large' name in nature of tasks. Although there must be a general idea of what all of them should be able to do.

I am free after November. I can work out a get together with Big Mike, Rescue Riley, Marcelo, Gunknifenut, and maybe some others. I think multiple users is a great idea!

You guys work out the details and I'll see what I can come up with..... as far as a knife.
Scott

I'll play if you guys don't mind. I have a new design I've been wanting to make and this is just the task for it.

Nick:)

allright.. this should be cool... :) looking forward to seeing what you all come up with..

I'd like to see Iz, Turley knives in this also. He's making some nice blades. But of course that will be up to him.

Let's pick a tester (like Tony) and let him give the list of tasks he'll be performing. I don't think it should necessarily be called a bushcraft knife. How about just an all around utility woods knife that you'd carry all the time. This would probably be for most people fall in the 3.5"- 5" blade length. The makers can decide what design would be best for the given tasks.

He's out of town but when he gets back, I'll twist his arm and force him to participate:D I'm sure he'll do it.

Hey Guys,
Great idea for an evaluation of at least my favorite genre of knife. Might I suggest some type of matrix so the eval can be somewhat standard. Bushcraft chores are a good place to start. I use the following:

1. Cord Cutting- various types of cord and string (push cuts)
2. One Stick Fire Making- batoning and feather stick making, striking the spine on a ferro rod.
3. Figure Four Trap Carving
4. Spoon Carving
5. Carving a bow drill set
Of course edge retention and ease of sharpening must be rated also.

You then come up with a scale of 1-10 and rate the overall performance of each chore.
I'm sure a lengthy dissertation is warranted as well.
Just a suggestion to help the cause. Good Luck.
