hello,
Just wondering y'all's opinion on what a good (somewhat budget friendly) knife combination for bushcraft and wilderness craft.
I was thinking something along the lines of 4-5" belt knife, 9-11" chopper, (possibly) 2-3" skinner/food prep/fine tasks
I will of course be carrying my leatherman wave and have a Tops Bob so will probably have that as my belt knife.
Christmas is almost here:D
I like the sound of the bk-9 and the Tops MSK
My climate is the pacific northwest.
Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

MORA Bushcraft 4.2" (around the $50 to $90 point mark depending on whether you want carbon or SS).

Skinning knife:

You could go looking for the old US made Schrade Sharpfinger in used condition at gun shows, flea markets or estate sales ...or just snap one up here on the forum or auction sites.

As for a budget friendly 2-3" skinners from new, here are a few; Buck PackLite $22, Columbia River K700KXP Ken Onion $58, Buck Ranger Skinner $57, BuckLite Field Master Combo $48, The Wyoming knife (strictly for skinning and not for other tasks like food prep) $30.

Which animal are you intending to skin (always a good pointer for other forum members to better guide you to the right knife)?

As for a longer blade, you yourself suggested the BK9 - cant go wrong with that.

Chopper = fiskers x7 hatchet $25
Belt knif = mora companion $15
Food prep = opinel no 8 $15

Not sure how budget friendly you are looking for, but this a pretty good combo for just over $50. Not the sexiest tools, but very usable.

If you have a tops Bob already then I would get a becker bk9 for a chopper and still go with an opinel for food prep.

What he said. More than adequate equipment if you have what is necessary between the ears.:D--KV

If you want to be "different":
- 9" folding saw ( BAHCO 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw, 9-Inch Blade - $22)
- 6" carbon steel fix blade for general chores
- SAK hunter XT for prep food and/or skinning

This is exactly how I'm set up minus the SAK - add BK 15 for food prep. 👍

Vaughan sub zero hatchet ( better than fiskars and only 20$ )
Old hickory 7" butcher 14$+/-.
Buck 110 40$+/-

Not that "different" or "out there" at all.

I would go with the folding saw, a 3-5 inch fixed blade, and a Vic Farmer.

(Side note...I always am amused when folks have things like "bushcraft" as part of their screen name, and then ask what a good bushcraft setup would be. Just me and the way my mind works, I guess....:D)

My setup is similar to the others listed so far....

Becker BK9 (chopper) or Silky/Bahco folding saw -- a folding saw will be a bit cheaper than a quality chopper/large fixed blade
Becker BK15 or 16 or sometimes my Swamp Rat RMD -- your Tops BOB fits in here
Orange Victorinox Farmer -- your Leatherman Wave fits in here

Good luck in your choices!
