So I'm think of my next knife purchase. I want to get a all around hunting/bushcraft knife, and something in a stainless steel, and I came up with these two options.

Cold Steel Master Hunter
4.5" blade
3/16 (.187) inch thick
VG1 Steel

Ontario Blackbird SK5
5" Blade
.13 inch thick
154CM steel

Just based on the steel type and thickness, which one would be better.

BTW I have tons of other knives including Mora and Kabar, so I don't need other options.

I have used the BlackBird for maybe 9 months now on and off........... I wouldn't get it. It's nice, but I think there is better. And I know there are a million vids of its indestructibility, but I broke my first, and with my second I continually saw it flex a lot on lighter tasks. If a knife flexes, then it's at risk of breaking.

Personally the Tops B.O.B. for $105 is a great deal. But not Stainless. Other than that, sorry guy. I actually use Bark River 1.5(3V), which means $240+

Good luck.

I had one but didn't like the bottom portion of the handle, restricting to hand movement on the pommel, curving around your wrist.

I own the first issue of the MH. No finer woods knife and I say that from lots of use. I wouldn't pry with it cause of the distal taper, and mine is Carbon V but I bought it like in 88 or there abouts and it has never failed me. So there ya go. keepem sharp

Not sure why you are set on stainless steel ? If rust is your concern, educate yourself on these 2 words: Fluid Film. SERIOUSLY, this stuff works. You can literally wipe down an uncoated carbon steel knife with it & leave it out in the rain & it will not rust.

LOTS of good economical choices if you expand your horizons to carbon steel. I have close to 100 carbon steel knives, axes, machetes, & store them in my basement in Rubber Maid containers. No rust issues, ever. I am 50 yrs old & have had many of my blades for 20 yrs now. GREAT economical hard use knives I have and/or used from someone else: KaBar/BK&T, Ontario, ESSE, Condor.

An excellent low cost trio i have is: my $21 Ontario machete (modified by me w/Bowie tip, 2 finger choil, jimping & firesteel flat spot), my Ontario SP2 (Spec Plus Air Force Survival Knife) & my Victorinox Huntsman w/X-large Zermatt sheath w/lighter & a mini sharpening steel (that actually works GREAT).

SP2 is the bottom one in above pic. ^^^

There are zillion other choices as well: Buck CSAR-T fixed blade & is stainless steel. It has excellent balance & a great sheath. Buck Reaper is also stainless steel, as is the Buck Short Night Hawk.

@TwinStick,

I'm curious if you could identify one of your knives for me. In the pictures containing all the Ontario SP series knives, what is the model of the second knife from the bottom? The one above the SP2. I think I found my next knife is OKC still makes that one.

Thanks!
