Bushcraft Knife Flaw - How Bad?

I just picked up a new bushcraft blade from UPS this Friday. Ordered this particular one based upon one of Brian's threads. It looked like an interesting knife, so I thought I'd check it out and ordered it from the manufacturer.

While checking the edge, I found a couple things that give me some concern. The first is a small nick. I'm not pleased, but I figure it will come out after a good sharpening or two.

The second is a different matter. About an inch from the nick is what looks like a small crack or fissure. I took a closer look with the help of a SAK magnifying glass. The flaw only shows on one side of the blade and does nnot appear to pass through it, but it does run from the edge to the coating. With the blade being coated, I cannot tell if the flaw continues to run up the blade.

I'm wondering what could cause something like this and if the flaw is bad enough to make a warranty call to the manufacturer.

I took a few pics, again with the help of the SAK. The first one is the nick - the second two are of the crack/fissure.

Any thoughts?

i would definatetly be sending that puppy back....:thumbdn: how long have you had it..

I would not accept that knife. :thumbdn:

Send it back, give them a chance to make good.

But I’m wary of any knifemaker that lets multiple flaws pass QC. :jerkit:

You know the old saying..."If it's got a crack, it needs to go back!"

Ok, so I just made that up, but there is no way I'd keep it. I'm sure the manufacturer will want to know about it and will make good on replacing it. -Matt-

send it back for sure man. that's an accident waiting to happen.

I'm positive they would not want you using that knife.

Nicks don't count, but that crack does have to go back. It happens. I had a blade with a small crack that I was able to sharpen out, but I wouldn't suggest it for how deep that one looks.

Cracks typically indicate a flaw in the steel or the steel stressed to much in the heat treat process. The crack will be larger than appears to the naked eye. This is a manafacturing flaw, hopefully they will stand behind their product.

Yeah, if you noticed it, you did so with the naked eye. It needs to go back. Dissappointing I know, but you'll be concerned the whole time you own it if you don't; hence, you won't use or rely on it when you should. They'll send you a new one; if they don't, let us know here.

Thats bad. You must send it back. Cracks into the edge mean a bad heat treat usually.

Nice avatar though...

Yikes!

Not sure what blade that it but it doesn't look like a bushcraft knife to me:confused:

Appears to be a coated blade tactical of some sort.:thumbdn:

Definitely send it back, it sure looks like that crack continues under the black coating.

That as someone else said, is an accident waiting to happen!
