Bushcraft knife recommendation

Benchmade saddle mountain skinner is an excellent bushcraft knife!

I picked up one of these myself and thought it was a nice knife, but the handle was too small and thin for me. Are you able to get a good grip on yours?

The Mora Bushcraft Black is a really good knife and it comes in well below your budget. The Entrek Javalina can often be found for under $150, so that might be worth considering. I've enjoyed my Dendra Russian Bear as well. It retails for around $170 but I picked that one up on sale for under $150.

Yeah, I stripped the 15 with some generic Home Depot paint stripper and it worked quite well. Just don't use anything with "eco-friendly" in its name, those things will barely put a dent in the coating.

Citri-strip zapped the coating off my Becker.

To the OP:
There are many, many people making bushcraft knives. And then there are all the traditional and modern Scandinavian knives. The problem is figuring out what a good fit actually is when you haven't had one and the opinion of what to get can vary from a 3.5" long, .8" thick blade to an 8", .25" chopper. I would buy something basic ($8 - $35) and then figure out what it lacks for you, then spend the larger money.

Not that $60 spent on something like the BK16 would ever lead to regrets. It's quite nice. Of course, so is a $13 Swedish knife.

Gazz, price range I would say under $150, being that It will be my first real bushcraft type knife. Hand size is between MD and LG leather gloves. My hand measures approximately 3 5/8 " across. I also think I want to be about a 4" - 4.25" blade

In that range a couple of your options might be out of reach. That being said adventure sworn makes a heck of a blade. I would go for the bk-16 too. Get the knife, give it a go, new handles? New sheath? All preference. Save the money for other bushcrafty things

I have a bark river Bushcrafter that I would let go for a good price. It's 3v steel with a great grind for bushcraft work. Let me know if you are interested.

Busse Combat makes some very durable knives, although most of their models seem to be sold out right now. Also, they are a bit spendy.

OP- here's a really good opportunity for you. Aside from potential for a great knife, it's safe. When you buy used, generally speaking (unless you modify it or beat the living hell out of it), you can sell it for roughly the same money you purchased for. It's a great way to try a knife without much monetary risk. If you try it and hate the knife, sell it and break even.

(Usually) readily available, and even available with a left-hand sheath if that's important to you. :)

Thank you guys this is super helpful. I know you are right, i need to put some time on a blade to see just what i am using it for. I just sent vernal2014 an email. Hopefully it will lead to a win/win.

One of the benefits of starting with a Mora is being able to experiment with different blade lengths, try carbon vs stainless, and then give away knives you don't want to keep without worrying about breaking the bank. Then you can narrow down your choices in a higher price range.

I would consider a knife with a full choil, too. Being able to choke up on the blade makes fine work easier for me.

Gotta ask, how is it hard to get the coating off? 15 minute soak with a can of jasco, paper towels and scraper and it's off in another 10 minutes.

This was close to what I experience as well. Finish ends up almost falling off after this procedure. Be sure to check out Bark River. That Gunny is awesome. I love my Adventurer II for bush craft! Although it's a hair shorter than what you are looking at.

Hello friends. First thank you all for the suggestions and tips. After some careful negotiations with my wife I was able to afford and deal made on the exchange with a great member. I will leave the details out and just say the member was super easy to work with and thank him (if he reads this) for a great experience.
I acquired a bk2, a tops bob, and a custom rwfred file knife. I am super excited to now have the ability to try 3 different knives and see what really works for my needs. I will post pics as soon as I can.
