Bushcraft Knife V's SAK !!!!

My SAK Farmer is the only legitimate bushcrafting tool I own. Its my only whittling blade, and can make super fine, hairy curls or wood. Or apply more pressure, and it becomes like a chainsaw slicing through wood. Comfy handle too.

SAK Huntsman and a chopper will handle most any woods chore I have every attempted. The saw is great for notching as well as sawing. The back of the saw works great for striking a fire steel. The blade takes a good edge and is the perfect size for fine work as well as cooking chores. It is a bit small for fuzz sticks, so I also carry a Buck 110. I carry some dental floss for repairs with the awl. The corkscrew pulls out PJBs when I pack them too tight. The mystery hook is great for tightening paracord and undoing knots when setting up a shelter.

I EDC the SAK as well. Perfect for office use, Sheeple friendly. Handy to have around the house. Very helpful when on the archery range.

The mystery hook
That's great, I didn't know it was called that but I've never been able to figure out what heck it was for.

If I found myself in dire straights with only the SAK I would consider myself very lucky. I love and carry a variety of fixed blades and though a bit more industrial than the SAK blade they are still a one trick pony.

According to the directions on my old Swiss Champ that mystery hook is for carrying packages wrapped in twine (so the twine doesn't dig into your fingers). Must be a Swiss thing. I thought it was a pretty desperate attempt to add more tools to the knife for CDI factor. I have used the hook like MBTull, though and it's okay for that.

Back in my Guard days, I EDC'd a SAK Tinker and added a Ka-Bar while in the field. (For some reason, you could get away with the Ka-Bar easier than an equally- or even smaller-sized commercially available knife.) On one occassion, I needed to build a gate to keep vehicles from driving through my unit's AO, and a buddy lent me his SAK with a saw (forget which model). After using that saw, I immediately upgraded to a Trekker and that has been my EDC ever since.

The medium-to-large fixed blade + SAK (with saw) combo really is hard to beat.

Great write-up, Pit!

Cool, I couldn't wrap my mind around it for some reason, the old Climber I carried for almost 30 years didn't have it, it's kind of new to me and haven't had any opportunity to use it, thanks for the info, it makes sense for the applications you guys have mentioned.

Great review! Ounce for ounce, SAKs are the best deal on the planet. Will do almost anything your ML will do, but will also work on screws and will open cans and bottles. Try to open a bottle of wine or adjust glasses with the ML.

Mystery Hook Update: Victorinox's official description is a parcel holder. When the parcel is wrapped in twine, you use the hook and the SAK turns into a handle.

It will also open a sardine can and pop the top on a can of liquid refreshment. You can use it to pull tent pegs, tighten your shoe laces, tighten up guy lines, undo knots and tamp tobacco in a pipe.

I think you could use it to cobble together a clamp or vise in the field. Use paracord and leverage from the mystery hook to twist the cord tight.

Bushcraft! Kephart would roll in his grave! campcraft boss, campcraft!

(no there is no difference I guess, I'm just overkilling it)

G'day Joe

Bushcraft! Kephart would roll in his grave! campcraft boss, campcraft!

(no there is no difference I guess, I'm just overkilling it)

Personally, there is a difference. Real Bushcraft encompasses far more than setting up and maintaining a camp :D

Kind regards
Mick
