bushcraft knife

Mora knives are great little cutters, but keep in mind that they are not all full tang. I believe the Mora 2000 is 3/4 tang, which should be plenty strong. The #1 I believe features a full 'rat tail' tang which again I think makes it pretty strong.

However there are some models with only a half tang or even what appears to be a 1/3 tang, and those I tend to worry a bit about when batoning or other rough use. Take a look at the x-ray here:

The tang is not an issue for proper mora use. As said, moras should not be used to baton things and other such stuff. Pairing mora with axe is winner combination (for instance, fiskars hatchet that I have wich is also affordable).

Well I personally will not buy a fixed blade that is not tough enough to baton with, but that's just me. A Mora will baton just fine as long as the tang reaches far enough into handle that you don't have to worry about the blade breaking away from the handle. I also hear the laminate versions are softer and not so great for batoning.

Having been running the woods camping, hunting ,fishing and trapping for more than 46 years with all kinds of knives and I have yet to be in a situation where I needed to baton a knife through any kind of wood. A knife should be used as a knife not a splitting wedge. Determine what you want to use your knife for and base your decision on that. If you need an axe to do the job, get an axe. Dont abuse and break a knife because of something you read or heard you should be able to do with it and then blame it on the quality of the knife. I believe most knife companies would not honor a warranty if they knew the owner had been beating on the back of the blade with a stick or rock prior to the knife failing.--Just my $.02 worth.--KV
