Bushcraft Library for Beckerheads?

That Serendipity thread got me thinking about a separate thread for Beckerheads to share reading materials, both online and offline, about primitive skills.
I found an old copy of Richard Graves' Bushcraft, and both Doc Canada and Ethan gave it their stamp of approval.
Next Amazon order, I was also been thinking of picking up the Mors Kochanski book, mainly because I often see folks reverentially invoking him in W&SS.
I want to see what all the hype is about.

What else do you recommend? If it's online, by all means, include some links!

Cool idea. If anyone has any recommendations for urban environment skills too, it would be greatly appreciated. Sadly, there's not a lot of bush to craft in the Southern Cali suburbs :grumpy:

If you figure that out, let me know. I bought that book on Amazon and it went on the next trip out to Half Priced Books. I didn't care for it at all. One thing I personally want to see in Bushcraft/Survival instructionals is good pictures, not chicken scratch drawings.

I plan on picking up Dave Canterburys book "Survivability for the Common Man" (waterproof version). Unfortunatley it has to be from his site, it's not carried by Amazon.

If you want a whole bunch of free .pdf books, check out www.nobullshitsurvival.com. You have to register like a forum, but they have a huge library of different subjects, including Wilderness Survival and Bushcraft type stuff.

I really would like to get some Ron Hood videos, personally.

I have the downloaded pdf books of Richard Graves' 10 Bushcraft, I also have a hard drive full of books and videos I will post links when I can get them online. :D

Thanks,

Almost forgot...
Doc pointed out that the Graves book shown above can be downloaded for free here: http://chrismolloy.com/www/p131

downloaded... not so much :) they removed teh PDF from that some time ago, but the internet loves archives...

this wasn't it: http://www.bcbin.com/bushcraft/bushcraft_2010.pdf but is interesting to read

let's dig more!

what we need is "The Ten Bushcraft Books by Richard Graves.PDF": http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="The Ten Bushcraft Books by Richard Graves.PDF"

which can be found here:
http://outdoors.free.fr/OM-PDF/Books/The_Ten_Bushcraft_Books_by_Richard_Graves.pdf
via: http://ebookbrowse.com/search/bushcraft-pdfs?ord=size-desc
this link provides a wealth of PDFs on bushcrafting/etc. seems if you click to view, that fails, but the download link provided works.

article here: http://www.survivalmonkey.com/forum/reading-room/10923-10-bushcraft-books-richard-graves.html

even MORE links for many more books:

this also has a lot of potential: http://www.hesperian.org/publications_download.php

many of these are going on my Kindle and/or iPad. given that a Kindle can run for a month, before charging, and charging is a simple matter of USB power levels achievable many ways... seems to be a good idea to have one to hold a vast library of information. my original Kindle doesn't do so well with PDFs, but the new ones are good. the Kindle DX is great. the iPad though, is the King of PDF readers. amazing really. color too.

I've been thinking about a Kindle, Bladite.
You're starting to peak my interest again.

an important detail with the Kindle, is that once purchased, you don't ever need to pay Amazon for content. course, having the wireless option can be amusing, but even that is not required.

I have to say Foxfire is a great series of books of outdoor skills and great reading. I was hooked on them as a kid, and the fact that most of the info for it was generated in my region of the Smokies, is just icing on the cake.

i've read those back in the day, and have been meaning to read them all, and the new ones.

i see them floating around as PDFs. tempting. paper is good too.

I like my Kindle, but I have found for instructional books like Survival books I prefer paper books. If I am just reading something from front to back like a novel then I prefer the kindle. It'll do if there is no other option, but sometimes I like flipping the pages to find a part.

I like the Kindle app on my Droid though. So if you have a smartphone you dont NEED a kindle device.

Sorry, but you need to DO rather than THINK.

I know I thought about it for too long. Now I can access both a Kindle and an iPad (I think I'm 'supposed to own' the darn iPad ... kids!). And I agree with the comments above.

If an old dog like me can admit to the value, well ... the conclusion is obvious.:);)

Hey Guyon, in case you don't want to reinvent the wheel.......
OMG - More reading!!! Nice!! Thanks, Doc.

I used to have Richard Graves' Bushcraft, in the one volume mass market paperback. Somehow misplaced the d@mn thing in a move. I'm going to have to replace it with the 10 little books.

Let's see. Warren's recommendations... just off the top of my head -

Cody's "98.6 degrees: the Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive"
http://www.amazon.com/98-6-Degrees-Keeping-Your-Alive/dp/1586852345

Cody's companion book - http://www.amazon.com/When-All-Hell-Breaks-Loose/dp/142360105X/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1

Ron Hood's DVDs at - http://www.survival.com/

All these inject a nice degree of humor into the serious topic of staying alive.

If you are into even MORE primitive (i.e. - going Native American) style you might want to check out Tom Brown, Jr.'s "Field Guide" series. They have a lot of survival goodies in them.

Of course all you guys know of these books/DVDs and I'm probably beating a dead horse in trying to add to your knowledge pool. ;)

Now... back to reading Doc Canada's list.

PS - I also like Hedgehog Leatherworks' Youtube videos. I especially like their "Improved Figure Four Deadfall". They might be worth a lookie-see.

Frankly, the new iPad is probably my ONLY chance.:)

I'm getting old now. All my girls are grown up ladies ... and now a single one has given me a grand-kid yet.
