I'm such a rookie at this whole thing I would like to know as well. I found that bass wood is likely to crack when going in the wrong direction. Can only tell you that because I chipped it out twice, and changed carving directions. Going against the grain with the crock knife was no problem, it was carving the handle in the wrong direction that spit the wood.

Interesting because I've alway herd that Basswood was really stable.

When I say "split" I guess I mean taking a chunk larger than I meant to. It didn't really split in half, or even all the way. Just meant to take a slice, and a piece 1/8 or an inch came out.

It is nice to be able to get so lost and being so close to my city at the same time... you can always be back for dinner in a pinch!
