I'm in the market for a bushcraft style knife. Something along the lines of an Esee 4 or 5. I was also considering the Benchmade 162. What other knives do y'all recommend? I don't want to pay more than $200 and I don't want to have to wait more than a couple months if it has to be made.

Hurry, run! Don't say 'Bushcraft' knife!! Yu will open yourself to the Bladeforums interrogations of what you will ever do with your knife, as well as other personal questions, possibly related to your undergarment preferences and pet's name.

Both your choices would make a great all purpose outdoor knife. I prefer the Benchmade personally, but the ESEE knives are great knives with a great warranty. If you don't want to break the bank, a Mora Robust is around 20 bucks and is an excellent. Want fancier, go for the Helle Viking. AWESOME!! That said, I vote for the Benchmade from the choices you listed. (Helle, Helle, Helle)

You've got a really wide range of options at $200. For my money, I'd say a Blind Horse Knives Bushcrafter, or better yet (IMO), Woodcrafter. You basically get a handmade knife at a factory price. Excellent materials, extremely well made, and a great company.

I'd have to say Kabar Becker BK-2 (Companion) would be a good choice for a general bushcraft knife. The BK-16 is about the same size as the ESEE 4 but with thinner bar stock. I like the BK-16. There are so many choices. Just get something you think will work and begin your journey.

If you can swing a little over that $200...

I'm really leaning towards a Bark River Bravo-1.

Welcome.

If you are leaning to Bark River...then why not one of the Bark Rivers designed specifically for bushcraft, like the Aurora, Liten Bror, or North Star?

If you are leaning towards the Bravo, then I get the feeling what you are asking us to suggest is a knife that will be used for tasks a bit different than bushcraft. (Though those tasks may include bushcraft.)

Which is fine! It's the reason for the "interrogation" jimh warned about. That "interrogation" is to help us help you get the knife best suited for the tasks you are looking at doing.

It's not always possible, especially in this day of online ordering, but handling any of the knives would help you quite a bit. The ESEE's handles are smaller and worlds away from the thick slabbed Bravo. I have owned both, and they did not suit me personally as far as handle fit, though both are extremely well made knives. As you can see form searches though, I am in the minority on not liking them!
