Bushcraft trio (well, quad) complete!

I thought I'd share my now finished Bushcraft trio (well, it's really 4 pieces with the juice!) I just scored the Collins axe on ebay from a gentleman who searches estate sales for only $34. I'm still trying to identify the age and model or style. The axe head is marked COLLINS and the handle is stamped COLLINS. the head measures 6 1/4" long and just under 4" wide from toe to heel. Total length is just at 18". It looked pretty ragged when I got it, but with a few hours of hand sanding and filing, it came back to life real nice. Of course no trip would be complete without my Breeden CUB, Benchmade Mini Rukus, and the juice. Every one of my purchases has in some way been influenced by the great info I have received here in WSS and on BF! Thanks to everyone who helped me get my gear right! Off to the woods...

nice setup.

that's a nice axe you have there. is that the stock handle, or something you put on?

i'm no expert, but it is at newest from 1966, when the company shut down.

it seems to me, based on a couple of examples i have seen, that collins liked to put small handles on heavy heads. this could be from a certain era, or it could be that only these examples of many have survived, but it is an impression i get.

the handle is stamped COLLINS and it came on the axe. It's in really great shape with minimal hits near the head, no splits, and nice solid grain pattern for handle cut. Almost too good to be true.

simon,
any suggestions on a pocket file to keep the axe sharp in the bush? thanks man.

Dont use a file I like to use a small diamond stone and a stone will put a better edge on and is very simple to use.

You can use what ever you wat but a file that seems crazy to me but if it works for you than nicholson files are nice and can be found at most store like lowes and hom depot.

small diamond stone... easy enough. thanks. this is my first axe and obviously i want to take good care of it.

very nice set up burddog. A file would bepend on if you struck some rocks while chopping and had some big knicks to work out, but to just sharpen up the edge a diamond stone/steel or some wet/dry sandpaper on a flat piece of wood or metal works good. I have a piece of 1/4" bar stock an 1 1.2 wide about 10" long with 220 grit on one side and 1000 grit on the other held on with spray adhesive. make a fine cutting file of you might call it a hone. The sand paper on flat steel also works good on scandi edges. Pat

Hi all,

Very cool set up James. I think Horace Kephart would be proud of that set up:D Way to go.
