Which one do you see you self as? I know, the difference really isnt that significant, but i thougt it would make for an interesting discussion. The two differ mostly in mentality. Are you more of a Ray Mears or a Survivorman?

I see a bushcrafter as a person who adapts to there enviroment. I see a survivalist as more of a person that adapts the enviroment to their needs.

So, which one are you? i havent decided on mine yet, but ill get my post up in a bit.

Meh, bushcrafter really. I don't feel the need to go out and 'conquer' the wilderness. I just like to go play in it and learn stuff about/from it. It's a great place to find some solitude!

But to me it doesn't seem like a survivalist would care as much about this forum, I would imagine that they'd learn enough to 'get by' and then they'd bow out of the more dense topics.

Neither, I rather see myself as plain, simple resourceful in the bush or not. Well, I guess that could include both?

What are the more "dense" topics your referring to?

I see myself as becomming a better woodsman. learning bushcraft skills enables me to be a better woodsman. I think we are all into survival because that is what we do we
live/survive until we die.

Well that is my thoughts,

Bryan

I am a survivalist that has turned more to Bush craft for it's more relaxed life style. Survival was the Military and those times taught the lessons of living on what you could find during a mission. Bushcraft usually means picking your circumstances and it is good practice for outdoor survival. Growing up on a farm/ranch in earlier days and i trapped and hunted and fished daily.

Bushcraft. If I have a tough times in the woods, I just go to the Hilton like Bear.

I see myself more as a bushcrafter... and a hack one at that, but here's my 2 cents for what its worth
I see bushcraft as the pursuit of forgotten knowledge for the sheer enjoyment of it
I see survivalist as focusing more on gear and preparedness
(ie I don;t need to make cordage I have 1000 yards of 550 as opposed to I got some 550 but making cat tail cordage is just cool)

I think a competent Bushcrafter can make a good survivalst but is doesn;t necessarily go the other way That's just my opinion YMV

It's kind of a sweeping topic, I just mean a person who is just wanting to 'get by' might not be so inclined to learn tons of knots or different edible plants or how to make a pipe/backpack/bowl from wood. Things that take some studying and practice.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, just people meeting their wants and needs as they see fit.

I see myself as both! I am into survivalism for the sake of being prepared for emergencies and the unknown. Along those lines, I like bushcraft for the knowledge base and to experiment and learn how to do with less. Bushcraft skills also become useful if one is not prepared fully for the survival situation. Hence, I agree Bushcraft covers survival, but not necessarily the other way around. I strive to be better at both! :)

I like to think I am a bit of both. I don't know more than I know about plants, knots, traps, hunting, compass...I am slowly teaching myself each thing. I am concerned with being prepared for most things or able to think and adapt to things that come up.

I am more of a bushcrafter for the sure fun of it. Although, learning more and teaching my 8 yr. old son about survival is fun too. Nearly all that we do brings up some discussion about the best way to do this and that in the bush.

great thread Brenden...

i would probably have to say that i am both... i will do what ever it takes to adapt a particular situation... we are also fairly well stocked just in case SHTF...:D

I am kind of both, I suppose. I love to have the gear and be prepared to survive, but I really like the feel of learning about the wild and how to make things with the items I can find in nature.
