Pretty impressive skills our brother demonstrates.

I seen this before. This is animal activist fake BS. Notice how it drops the match then they cut to the fire It never touches the tinder because it's a chimp and why in the world does anyone expect it to hold a flaming match. It's instincts are to drop it. A bunch of cut video pasted together to create an illusion. Why isn't it enough for a chimp to be a chimp. On a side note the AK video is totally real. :D

I see your points but various News Agencies feature the video and didn't pull it. I saw it on CNN and here it is on NBC again http://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/marshmallow-toasting-bonobo-charms-internet-n82441
Also its's not a chimp but very close.

What's with all the fake animal videos on here lately?

You confuse the media with sources of reality?
Sadly my sources for monkey realities are mostly documentaries media and zoos.
Personal experiences I have only from my annual visits to India.
Do you have better ones?

Have you ever seen normal monkeys in a city? They open windows climb in houses and open fridges to find food. One left a little gift behind. They open water tabs (the screw out door type), to drink but always forget closing them again. The little ones like playgrounds. They do pull ups on monkey bars and have fun sliding down the slides. The old ones just watch.
So much for normal monkeys. You might have seen even better tricks from trained ones in a circus.

The one in the video from a BBC documentary is a particular smart one. Just check for more of his videos.
If it would be known to be a fake these reputable media sources would have pulled the articles and clips.
Thus I trust them usually more than some random Internet guy like me.

"The video first appeared in July 2011 as part of the promotion for the 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was released on August 5 of that year and starred James Franco."

Wait, Thomas, you don't belive everything on the news?! ;)

That's the computer generated AK video, not the marshmallow one.

of course, the bonobo you posted is real though. Practices better fire safety skills than most campers out here!

In college, a professor told us that H. sap. was the only tool-user. I stuck up mt hand and said I had seen otters using rocks to open shellfish. He told me I was being anthropomorphic and repeated that only "man" used tools. That episode seems bizarre given what we know today.

Still, the video seems to be a scam on its very face. Were I trying to document a fellow primate building and starting a fire I would (SURPRISE!) actually picture the creature building a fire and starting a fire. The film shows neither. It implies but does not show - as is the case with any good con.

The Video
, is a summary, preview, promo, advertisement of a documentary embedded into News articles and other media. Of course for that purpose it's more useful to cut and edit the best parts together instead of showing Kanzi trying it maybe multiple times for 20 minutes or so.

Monkeys in general
Can do more than most people imagine who haven't seen these guys in action. From that Ive seen (previous post) such skills are very plausible especially if taught by a human.

Kanzi,
Is well known for his smartness and there are less cut videos. One of them in this very thread where this monkey is using a frying pan.

Surprise them?
because maybe it's not just a trick and natural behaviour?;) Nobody claimed that. Of course it's a trick no way monkeys produce match sticks and mashmallows in their factories. I don't think these tree huggers have any paying jobs at all.

Monkeys processing food,
That's how I came across the video.
On a German news site I read about studies how monkeys prefer to cook their food (if you provide them a way to do it) If given the choice of eating raw food or waiting for it to be cooked they prefer to wait. Though I can imagine that will change if they are starved for a day or two. At least that's what happens to me.
