Bushfinger by Andy Roy

Thanks Mike, I'm glad you liked the post. Those are basically the same words I said when I opened the package.

I love his work too and have been watching it develop for some time now.

WOW, I'd definitely be hanging on to that knife! Got any pictures of it?

i couldn't agree more... Andy's definitely has class...:) his work is amazing..

here is a pic of my old skool FB Nessmuk, with my Terrasaur...:) the nessie is a solid user and is pure joy to use in the camp/kitchen..

Recluse. . . Bow Legged belt knife. . .EDC. . . Now this!? Actually, when I was going thru Andy's designs some time back, I was sort of going "If this blade could only go to this handle" and vice-versa on somesuch thoughts, I really think the Bushfinger design nailed it!

BTW,

...we talked about prefs

Thanks MB, glad you enjoyed the review, and yes it is a fantastic knife!

I practice a lot of "bushcraft" with tactical knives just to take them out of their primary design element because of a mind set permanently burned into my way of thinking from past experiences. Watching the current global situation and the disposition of the urban environment I live in further reinforces the desire to practice that. In the event of a disaster, either natural (which is unlikely) or man made (likely), the first environment I'll be dealing with will be urban and from my previous experiences I like a heavier blade in an urban environment. I practice bushcraft with these heavier knives because my goal will be to, at the very least least temporarily reach the wilderness environment with my family... away from the predators of the streets. I need to know how well the heavier knives I keep just for survival in such situations will fare in a natural environment.

In an attempt at answering your question....For bushcraft for the sake of bushcraft...for the relaxing recreational/wilderness living aspect of it I prefer a knife like the Bushfinger, it really is perfect for me in this aspect...uncoated blade for less drag (though I do like the scale left on the flats or a bead blast finish for grip when holding the blade in a pinch grip), hi convex grind but with a strong spine combined with a wicked point, edge only slightly lower than the handle, and a very user-friendly, comfortable handle to work with. Hence my turning to Andy after getting to handle his work in person at Blade. When I saw his work I knew he could easily make the knife I needed.

Ideally I'd have what I have drawn out as a "tactical-bushcraft" knife that I intend to talk to Andy about at some point in the future when he is more open to taking custom orders again and I have more money to work with. It is drawn from the perspective of buschcraft knife first... has many similarities to this knife only slightly larger with some additional features. I'd want it made out of something like 3/16, 7/32 or so S-7 for toughness in very abusive situations.

Thanks for your long reply. Now I understand. I think it´s wise thinking of you. The knife that can do it all more or less, and take som heavy beating at the same time.
My Fällkniven F1, I tend to place it in that category "tactical-bushcraft-urban-survivalknife".

I always appreciate your excellent working reviews. You put a knife through its paces with real world tough work. And the comments you make about the knife are always well stated and well illustrated with clear photos.

O yeah, and the knife is to die for.

Thanks Knar, I really appreciate the compliments and I'm glad you enjoy the reviews. I have fun working with all of them but this one is truly a pleasure to work with.

Those both look great, that nessie is timeless eh? I like the looks of that Terrasaur too, looks like it would handle great and has a wicked point.

Thanks man, glad you enjoy it! Oh, I like several of Andy's designs a lot. Handling them at Blade was definitely a high point in the weekend. There are a couple of other designs I want for other reasons but I really do love this one very much and it suits me perfectly for all around Bushcraft uses.

Hey...you knew what I was talking about right...if that's the worse thing I ever get reported for i have it made :D

My Fällkniven F1, I tend to place it in that category "tactical-bushcraft-urban-survivalknife".

One of the ones I have pegged into that category now is my Fallkniven A1...it is a great knife, handles like a dream, cuts wonderfully, and chops like a bigger knife than what it is. I like it much better even now that I have the coating off of it and a bead-blast finish on it. However it is a bit large for "recreational" bushcraft, and though a very nice knife it isn't really the most aesthetically pleasing knife in the world. Also it is still a military survival knife and I turned to Andy to rescue me from a tactical/survival over-load and he did a d@mn fine job of that. It's nice hitting the woods in a different frame of mind now and then.

Have you ever used the ladyfinger? Any idea how they compare?

Thank you for the excellent review and great demonstration photos. I was looking at the Recluse but now you have me drooling over this knife!

I haven't gotten to use one yet, but it was the Ladyfinger I first really fell in love with. I did get to handle one at Blade and reeeeeaally liked it a lot like I knew I would. I think it would handle great. This knife is an evolution of the ladyfinger without the swayed spine, which does suit me better personally though. I do hope to work my way to a Ladyfinger later.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. Like several of Andy's designs I find the recluse very appealing, and hope to get one some day... but this is the design he come up with after we talked and I absolutely love it.

The Nessmuk in that picture is the first knife I ever sold. I've made and sold over 600 knives now! Mike bought the first one ever.

The Ladyfinger has a slimmer blade edge to spine and a bit of sway to the back. Otherwise the dimensions are the same.

Wow, it has to be both fun and nostalgic to look back on the first ones. Your work just keeps getting better and better.

Thank you! Knew I shoulda grabbed that one last week....stupid self-control! :grumpy:;):D:thumbup:

I sat out on the deck yesterday evening and used the Bushfinger to work on a couple of projects. I finished up the adjustable pothanger I started, and I've almost finished up a new firebow I cut from a branch in a drush pile with the saw of my SAK a couple of months ago. I wish had thought to take a before pic of the bow but it just didn't occur to me...I just wanted to fimish it.

Awesome review mist. Sounds like a great little knife.

Definitely a great little knife, though I am feeling the difference after all of the cutting and whittling I've done lately I'ts still the original edge I used last night to whittle on the bow and that pot hanger with. It's not quite shaving sharp anymore and I probably need to freshen the edge before the next little project but definitely still sharp enough to work with. I've been really impressed with this knife all around. Andy did an awesome job! I'm really looking forward to the machete next week. I am going to use it and the Bushfinger in the spoon contest and this is going to be so much fun :)

I've used the Bushfinger as one of a couple of Fiddlebacks used to make another spoon.

Up until this point I had used no other tool but the machete and I really had fun with it.

The it was time to switch to a smaller knife.

I whittled on it for a while an hour or so and then it was getting dark. I still have a long way to go, but I made a pretty good start.

Then I used the extended tang to scrape out the bowl after burning.

Then a little more whittling and sanding and I'm getting closer to being finished. definitely digging how this knife handles

Great review Mist that bushfinger is definately growing on me. That's a problem i'm having at this point deciding which model of Andys to get first.
Thanks for the insight and pics.
