Well, I got to get out for some fun in the woods this last weekend. I had a great time with Joezilla and Matt. Matt was a cool kid, and it was alot of fun to hang out with him an Joe. Matt's 11, and a soon to be busher in his own right. On with the story.

I had a 3 1/2hr drive to make to get to the spot, and at 3hrs into the trip, I realized, I forgot my sleeping bag. Dumbass. So, I get there, and unpack and setup, meet and greet, and just kinda get to know everyone, and the location. It was cold that night, I had 2 wool blankest and bivy sack I borrowed from Joezilla. I was good that night, the temps dropped down to the mid 30's, but, my toes were cold, cold, cold. Since I arrived in the dark, when I awoke in the morning, this was the view when I cracked the cacoon I had made for myself.

Nice, huh? We made some breakfast, I don't eat in the mornings, so I just had some tea. I boiled water in the new Billy I got. Joe made some "hyper" tea, he can fill you in on what its called, and Matt had sausage, cheese, bread, and apricots. That kid can eat, let me tell ya.

Joe sliced some bread, Joezilla style

After breakfast, Joe wanted to make some L7 fish traps for some fresh trout for dinner. I've never made'em, but trust me, they are definetly going in the memory banks for future use. Here is the one that Joe and Matt made

Knif Pron. That's my trap, but you can't see it for the FBF goodness

We all made traps, and we use 3 different types of bait, I used cheese, Matt used a cricket, and Joe used a grub
When we got back to the camp, Joe wanted to break out some firecraft on us, so, we collected sage thrush on the way back and some other fluffies. Out come the bow drill, hand drill, and fresnel kits.

I got my cedar kit working finally, after letting it dry out in my car for 2 months. It took me 3 tries to get the tender lit, the sage didn't want to take. I added some fluff to the innards, and viola fire.
Matt was working on basic knife handling and making spindles out of poplar.

Joe worked the hand drill, we got smoke, but no coal.

After that, we got some lunch, and decided to build a shelter. We needed some poles, so out comes the heavy guns. Matt took lead on the choppin'

We dropped about 16 Sycamore saps about 2-3" in diameter, then threw them down the hill to our shelter site. We got started building, and we decided to try a canvas tarp, and Joe and Matt wanted to go check the traps anyway, so I stayed behind to work some more on the shelter.

This what we got done, its not finished, and its big, but that was the idea, not survival, just a shelter.

When Joe and Matt got back, I heard a "Hey, Brother, You gonna wanna see this!!!!" I drug my fat ass up the hill and lo and behold, Matt's trap got us some fresh trout. A NICE fresh trout.

Joe whipped us up a Bushcraft fish grill.

Then we started cleaning the fish for the grill, Joezilla/Matt style

That was some damn good trout, GOOD JOB MATT!!!!!

The next day, we got up, goofed a bit, cleaned up and headed out. Went and got some fine Mexican food, and back to Joezilla's nest, for some knife fun and coffee. Then I headed home.

All in all, a perfect weekend, other than freezing my ass off both nights, it was awesome, fun, and very informative. I learned some cool stuff that I had never know before, and plan on using in the future. Thanks, Joe, and thanks Matt, it was a blast.

Every wanted to see what a startled Moose in the wild looks like?

Looks like a blast man!!! kudos, its great to get out isn't it?? trout running where were you?? I wish trout ran out here, it does but its stocked trout..

I'd kept the head on and just gutted it myself, I'm sick like that ;)reminds me of the time I first ordered trout at a restaurant and they brought out the whole fish !!! I was blown away, trying to act like 'oh i was expecting this'. .;)

was that a condor bushcraft Matt was using?

Yep, and it worked quite well. Condor has been on my radar for a while now, and I gots to play with almost all of them. Even got me a Kumunga. Ya'll should really look at the Sapien, seriously. Probably the most bushiest, handiest, cheapest knife you could hope to get. Pretty much everything in their Camp Knife column on their website is on my radar now. Man, if I don't quite buyin' knifes, though, Lady is gonna put the smack down on my butt, and not in a good way, like I like:D, but in the the bad way that I don't:grumpy:.

Like my buddy says, "one good showing is worth two good tellings.":D
I've had plenty of showings.:(

:DI hear that !!

I always sell something then buy something new, except sometimes I do the double up deal... :rolleyes:that's kinda my equalizer, if at all a plan..when the tensions building in the homested..

More of the same stuff, different angle. Really love those L7 (thats what doc C. has me callin 'em now) traps. Super simple! It was wonderful to see how elated Matt was that he caught something with just a little work and stick in the ground. Of course there are more pictures of...Matt eating. We probably would have left the head on, but Matt really wanted to try it without the head, and of course I was up for trying machete vs trout. That shelter will be a Work in progress for the next few weeks. I am hoping to grab some poplar bark from a recent clear cut, but the sap isn't running right now. Someone just told me of a bamboo plot near by too that may have permission to harvest from.

Very nice, any of you guys get a close up of the trigger mechanism on the L7? I can't quite get all the info from Moose's first post.

Looks like an action packed weekend. That is a lot of stuff to do in a short period of time. Congrats on the fish.

Looks like a blast. I really like those fish traps...I'll have to look them up.

Joezilla- have you gotten coals with hand drill before? I strongly suggest kneeling. It does so much for the ability to apply downward pressure. What woods were you using?

great stuff guys... definitely looks like a good time.. the little dude rocks..:)

Here's the best I got on the trap lock. The L7 is quite simple, the L is the downward stic, and you cut it look like an L. The 7 stick is anchored in in the ground, cut it look like a 7. Hook the two together, and slide it in and out to adjust the tension of the trigger. The fishing line is attached to the L at the bottom, and the spring string is attached at the top. I done a spiral tie in, just 'cause. When the fish bites the line, it pulls the L straight out from the 7, the spring pops, sets the hook, and bam, you got fish. Works great, gonna keep that one in the log, fo' sho'.

Yucca on a poplar board. I was taught to cut a trough instead of a notch, but I have made them smoke like hell, but no coal. I have been practicing here at the house with no workable materials, just to get the tech down. When I tried that one, I got smoke in 2-3 runs down, but petered out and gave up quickly. My bowdrill kit worked perfect. 2 holes, 3 coals. The first two times, I lost the coal to the tinder bundle, then Joe gave me some fluff to load the inside of my bundle, and there you go. I'm at about 80% on my bow drills. I'm gonna concentrate on my hand drill next, just gotta get some material first. I'm pretty sure I can get it, I just haven't put the effort into it yet.

I've got it that way before a few times, with yucca on yucca. No one was around to watch me though :P. I have tried both ways, and I'm still experimenting with which one I like more. One is pressure and the other is speed. I can put more pressure with the squat version but more speed with the sit down method...most of the time. I'm no pro though, and I HATE doing it in front of people though. After I didn't get any smoke right away, I quit while I was ahead as I was pooped and wanted to help Matt with his.
