Well, I got to get out for some fun in the woods this last weekend. I had a great time with Joezilla and Matt. Matt was a cool kid, and it was alot of fun to hang out with him an Joe. Matt's 11, and a soon to be busher in his own right. On with the story.
I had a 3 1/2hr drive to make to get to the spot, and at 3hrs into the trip, I realized, I forgot my sleeping bag. Dumbass. So, I get there, and unpack and setup, meet and greet, and just kinda get to know everyone, and the location. It was cold that night, I had 2 wool blankest and bivy sack I borrowed from Joezilla. I was good that night, the temps dropped down to the mid 30's, but, my toes were cold, cold, cold. Since I arrived in the dark, when I awoke in the morning, this was the view when I cracked the cacoon I had made for myself.
Nice, huh? We made some breakfast, I don't eat in the mornings, so I just had some tea. I boiled water in the new Billy I got. Joe made some "hyper" tea, he can fill you in on what its called, and Matt had sausage, cheese, bread, and apricots. That kid can eat, let me tell ya.
Joe sliced some bread, Joezilla style
After breakfast, Joe wanted to make some L7 fish traps for some fresh trout for dinner. I've never made'em, but trust me, they are definetly going in the memory banks for future use. Here is the one that Joe and Matt made
Knif Pron. That's my trap, but you can't see it for the FBF goodness
We all made traps, and we use 3 different types of bait, I used cheese, Matt used a cricket, and Joe used a grub
When we got back to the camp, Joe wanted to break out some firecraft on us, so, we collected sage thrush on the way back and some other fluffies. Out come the bow drill, hand drill, and fresnel kits.
I got my cedar kit working finally, after letting it dry out in my car for 2 months. It took me 3 tries to get the tender lit, the sage didn't want to take. I added some fluff to the innards, and viola fire.
Matt was working on basic knife handling and making spindles out of poplar.
Joe worked the hand drill, we got smoke, but no coal.
After that, we got some lunch, and decided to build a shelter. We needed some poles, so out comes the heavy guns. Matt took lead on the choppin'
We dropped about 16 Sycamore saps about 2-3" in diameter, then threw them down the hill to our shelter site. We got started building, and we decided to try a canvas tarp, and Joe and Matt wanted to go check the traps anyway, so I stayed behind to work some more on the shelter.
This what we got done, its not finished, and its big, but that was the idea, not survival, just a shelter.
When Joe and Matt got back, I heard a "Hey, Brother, You gonna wanna see this!!!!" I drug my fat ass up the hill and lo and behold, Matt's trap got us some fresh trout. A NICE fresh trout.
Joe whipped us up a Bushcraft fish grill.
Then we started cleaning the fish for the grill, Joezilla/Matt style
That was some damn good trout, GOOD JOB MATT!!!!!
The next day, we got up, goofed a bit, cleaned up and headed out. Went and got some fine Mexican food, and back to Joezilla's nest, for some knife fun and coffee. Then I headed home.
All in all, a perfect weekend, other than freezing my ass off both nights, it was awesome, fun, and very informative. I learned some cool stuff that I had never know before, and plan on using in the future. Thanks, Joe, and thanks Matt, it was a blast.
Every wanted to see what a startled Moose in the wild looks like?
Well, Joe got a pic of one while I was takin' a 5'er havin' a smoke. Thats a cig, I roll my own. I know what you were thinkin'. Shame on you.
