Bushin' Out, Weekend with Joezilla

Great stuff buddy, I'm gonna have to give those fish traps a try sometime, I'd seen them before and then forgot about them !

I think it was the year before last that we went camping for a couple of nights and I decided that it was warm enough to leave behind my sleeping bag and just take my therma liner to sleep in.......big mistake, it dropped down to below freezing where we camped and I slept...well lay...wearing all the clothes I'd taken and still shivering like crazy all night. To top the night off we had a bear snorting round our tent, not a great night !!!!

I got my cedar kit working finally, after letting it dry out in my car for 2 months. It took me 3 tries to get the tender lit, the sage didn't want to take. I added some fluff to the innards, and viola fire.
Matt was working on basic knife handling and making spindles out of poplar.

Moose my man, the content of this picture is not seen enough in this day & age. Someone under the age of 21 out in the wilderness & not imobilized in front of a tv or video console. My apologies to anyone who that offends, but I have noticed a severe decline in attendance in our local Boy Scout & Cub Scout packs & troops in the last decade. Two guys who take the time to teach a child some skills that hopefully one day he will teach his children, & to some of us a dying art. You both should be proud.
Glad you both had a great time, & all you have to do is look at that shot of Matt holding that hatchet . . . . enough said.:)
Great shots, thanks for letting us tag along with ya'll . . .
Be safe.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing! I need to look into those fish traps too...seems like a really good idea!

Some awesome photos guys, look like it was a great trip, L-7s are really versatile with different useful variations. I used to use a variation that required more cordage pretty effectively.

Great trip Moose! Good on ya for taking the young fella out. Looks like he's progressing quite nicely with his bush-craft.

If there's *any* Community that's gonna be the banner carrier for these activities, it's gotta be here and Moose & Company get a Gold Medal for investment in our Youth.

These threads always bring a bite (yup, i mean "bite" as in taking a bite) of challenge/conviction to me - which is a GOOD thing. My kids are 7 n almost 5 and i've been sorta lax on getting them out lately.

THanks for the challenge!

Thanks a ton guys, but Joe is the real hero here. Matt is one of those kids that loves it outside, and all of that is Joe. Joe teaches and volunteers with kids alot (they are the only ones that can keep up with him, LOL) I just dropped some pointers and guidance in here and there. Joe gets all the credit, not me. Matt's a geat kid with a bright future, you should see some of the videos him and his friends made, they've got a youtube channel, and its some spectacular work. Matt says he like to do the editing. Good stuff and thanks for all the kind words guys.

That looks like a really great outing guys! Kudos to Joe, my son was watering at the mouth at the trout Matt caught (my son is 11-years old to). There's just something special about doing activities outdoors...especially bushcraft styled skills (inluding fishing and hunting) that help mature and build confidence in young kids (girls included).

Thanks for sharing guys!

Thanks for the kind words Moose. This outing was to go through a dry run of some of the stuff that will happen with the next "bushcraft basics" that will be going on for kids and adults later on. You can get kids way more motivated about things than adults. For instance, I never can find a group of adults that wants to go look for bugs :P

Outstanding story! It looks like a good time was had by all. Q 1: Moose, did you sleep in the bivy the second night? Or did you take the shelter and use a fire to keep warm? Q 2: Any possibility of this type of event happening again?

More of the same stuff, different angle. Really love those L7 (thats what doc C. has me callin 'em now) traps. Super simple! It was wonderful to see how elated Matt was that he caught something with just a little work and stick in the ground. Of course there are more pictures of...Matt eating. We probably would have left the head on, but Matt really wanted to try it without the head, and of course I was up for trying machete vs trout. That shelter will be a Work in progress for the next few weeks. I am hoping to grab some poplar bark from a recent clear cut, but the sap isn't running right now. Someone just told me of a bamboo plot near by too that may have permission to harvest from.

LOL - I still think we need binomials for trap triggers. And you still need to try out the nail trap trigger. :D - no wood to carve.

Doc

Oh I see Doc. It would be harder to produce the part B that you have in yours though than notching some out to make the L & 7 pieces eh !

What's the nail trigger that you mentioned ?

Thanks for sharing, Moose. Now I know I won't be forgetting my sleeping bag this weekend. ;)

I did sleep in the bivy for a couple of hours, but the second night, we had a hard frost hit, temps dipped past freezing and at around 0230, I piled out with a swollen bladder and the death shivers. I rounded up some fire wood, stoked the fire, grabbed my wool blanket, wrapped it around my shoulders and caught heat from the fire. When I got warm, I was nodding off, so I just covered up with the wool right next to the fire. In an hour I woke up as the fire died down, I stoked it and fell asleep, repeat until 0645 daybreak. My butt was whupped Sunday night, but I still had a great time.

Yeah, there will be others to be sure. Whenever Joe wants to hit the woodline, I'm down. Having Matt there was great, but an adults only event might be on the agenda in the future. Either way, I got a Spring Survivalist Gathering coming up in a few months, and you're welcome to attend then.

Great photo's and rundown Moose of your trip. Looks like you three had a great time!

Every wanted to see what a startled Moose in the wild looks like? Well, Joe got a pic of one while I was takin' a 5'er havin' a smoke. Thats a cig, I roll my own. I know what you were thinkin'. Shame on you.

Moose, I have been trying for the last 45 minutes to put a caption to this, but everytime I start to think of one, I look at it & start laughing again.
All I can think of is "A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words". Great shot, would make a nice wallpaper for your computer . . . :)
Be safe.
