I decided to put this in the for sale section since I'm not sure if the mods would yell at me for putting it in Shop Talk....

Here's the deal. I've found a good deal locally on a hydraulic forging press, but I'm short of funds. I'm willing to make somebody (or an organized group of somebodys if that's the way I can make this work) an excellent one time deal. Here's how I'd like to work it:

- You pre-order (and pre-pay) damascus from me. Any patterns and size of your choosing.
- I make your steel, on a schedule we both agree is reasonable prior to making any deal.
- For every dollar you spend on my steel, I will send you $2 of product at my regular prices (which are pretty reasonable IMHO).

That's it! It's just that simple! I need $2000 in cash to get my hands on the press in question. So, $4000 in steel can be yours for half off!

Now, some Q&A:

Q: What steels do you use?
A: I use 1084 from our own Aldo Bruno and 1095 and 15n20 from Kelly Cupples. No recycled materials, no "mystery steel"

Q: Do you guarantee your steel?
A: Yes I do! I guarantee that any damascus I deliver will be free from weld flaws or inclusions of any kind, or I'll replace it....double.

Q: Will it be ground flat?
A: All steel will be delivered blanchard ground to the thickness of your choice.

Q: Will it be annealed?
A: Yup! All steel is delivered only after using Kevin Cashen's recipe for an approximated spheroidized anneal.

Q: This sounds like a scam. How do I know you won't take my money and run Deker?
A: It's not a scam. I promise. Ask folks that know me. I'm an honest guy. To be completely honest I'm just whoring myself on this one, but trying to provide a decent value while doing it. If there's anything I can do to make you feel more comfortable, let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate.

Q: What patterns can you make?
A: LOTS. Your standard twist/raindrop/ladder. W's and it's variants (fireball, firestorm, etc). Mosaics of many kinds, random, canisters, stuff nobody has ever seen before! Including me! :)

Q: Why should I help you out?
A: Because by helping me, you're not only acting as a patron of the arts, but also helping yourself...TO A 50% DISCOUNT! :D

Q: How much damascus are we talking about here?
A: Well, it depends greatly in patterns and sizes, but here's an idea. If you want 1"x1/8" steel in the more standard patterns (random, raindrop, ladder, twist, etc), I'd generally charge $12/inch. That's 28 FEET of steel. At 1 1/2"x1/8" I charge $15/inch. That's 22 FEET of steel! We can work out a good deal for whatever sizes you need.

So, that's my pitch. I'll put together some photos of steel I've made in the past and post them here later tonight. Right now, I've got to feed the dogs though :)

Some pics:

I don't have any "Plain W's", but here are a couple of W's-based patterns.

Post some pics of your W pattern, hard to find some that isn't produced specifically by that maker for his blades :D Can't guarantee I'd be a power buyer but I'd definitely be interested in some!

help me out, what is blanchard ground? How flat is it? I want to be able to water jet cut the material. How wide can you make 1/8" or 3/16"? I would have a budget of $500, what can I get for that. I like random and rain drop. Let me know, I am interested.

Big Smitty,

Blanchard grinding is also sometimes referred to as "rotary surface grinding". The workpieces are put onto a giant magnetic chuck that rotates under a rotary grinding head. The bonus is that much larger pieces can easily be done than with a typical surface grinder, and multiple pieces can be ground simultaneously, which reduces cost. Accuracy is generally withing a couple of thousandths across the workpiece. Perfectly suitable for water jet or laser cutting after it's ground. I'll try to get some pics this evening of a blanchard ground finish on some stock I have here. Surface grinding is also an option if you need things dead nuts flat, but I'm not certain what the prices are like, I'd have to contact my grinder and ask him.

As far as width goes, it depends on pattern. Random and raindrop are easier to do wide so that's not too much of an issue. I'm going to say that I could get to somewhere between 3 and 4 inches of width and still keep things consistent enough for the grinder. If all else fails, for wider stuff I can visit a buddy nearby who has a 4" wide rolling mill I can finish flatten on. Do you like higher layer counts or lower layer counts?

Just as another note I hadn't posted above, for patterns like raindrop and ladder I forge the pattern in rather than cutting it in. What does this mean? Basically, it means you won't be able to "grind through" the pattern as it goes all they way through the steel. This uses a lot more steel in the process (for example, your 1/8" stock finishes forging as ~3/8" thick. Then that gets ground to 1/8"), but I think it's worth the extra material and effort as it produces a better billet in the end.

As I said before, I'm not averse to working with a group of folks to get this plan in motion. So, if you think maybe you don't need $2000 in steel, how about $500?

Thanks again guys!

Some more mosaic pictures.

These pieces are grubby from being handed around at hammer-ins for a couple years, but they still show nicely.

Modified "Fire Within".

Jakob,

I'll ship anywhere that has a postal service :) As to shipping, I can't really estimate that without knowing what types and sizes of steel you'd want. Drop me a PM with some specifics on what you're looking for and I'll see what I can figure out.

Oh, and PayPal is just fine.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I'll send you an email later today with specifications.

Hey folks,

I just had a conversation with a gentleman about this and it look as if we've struck a deal. Now I just need to get in touch with the gentleman who has the press and make sure I'm still first in line.

I will honor the pricing I have given to folks already though (Big Smitty, Jakob, and those who PMed me) as long as it's alright that I give priority to the order I took this morning.

Thanks again for the support folks. You'll be seeing lots more steel from me here in the for-sale section in the future...

UPDATE: I just confirmed that the press didn't run away before I got to it! Here is the for-sale thread with pics of the new beast that will be following me home next weekend. :D
