I picked up a Busse Basic 3 and now I have become interesed in the entire Basic Series.

Could some HOG let me know how many there were and their names?

Also were there various generations or just one series?

Thanks,
Tony G

IIRC, from Bussecollectors site, there were the Basic 3,5,7 & 9 plus the 4 and 6 as european releases. Pete

Pete nailed it as far as I know....but I know I know nothing! Smooth and crinkle coats.

Tony, the wrinkle (pun) is that the smooth coats and crinkle coats are subtly different knives, the choil is much larger on the smooth coats (except maybe my B-9? ), the crinkle's seem to have more belly. There's a bunch of subtle differences. Just when I thought I had a full set (American), it was pointed out to me I was missing a few, "More to collect".

These are the only pics I have handy, you can see the differences in the B-3's

I'm 2 short of having a set of each, I've got a 3,5,7,9 but different finishes still missing a crinkle 5 and a smooth 9, the hunt continues.

Good luck, and shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! don't tell anybody about the Basics series ;)

If you like the 3, then I think you will love the 5, 7, & 9. IIRC, as between the four of them, the 3 was the least popular (in demand) and the 7 was the most popular.

The 5 seems to be the hardest to find.

I've had 4, and not one was mint!

Real users.

I've had mint in ALL the other sizes.

Just 1 B5 left, and it's a keeper!

Rob

five will be the hard one to get, my solution was to send a nine to grinducci and have his mod done :cool:

.

So the Basic 5 is the hardest to find??? Hmmm, that's funny b/c that was my very first Busse that I acquired just over a year ago. And if she is not mint, she is very close. And what's even funnier (if you could call it funny), she is on my short list for some serious mods that will (hopefully) make her look marvelous AND unrecognizable as a Basic 5.:eek::eek:

I have responded to several questions about Busse Basics over the years.

Mostly having to do with the steel.

There are two Basic runs(Pun intended) Smooth and Crinkled.

With the largest difference between the two being the Belly depth on the Basic number 3 and up to about a half inch variance in length in some of the knives(not just the 3)

In the Begining Jerry Said "Let all Busse Sheaths be Equal" and it was so.

High Desert Low Ride with a tie down for the leg and a Belt dis-connect for the two larger Basics, the #7 and the #9.

Factory Kydex for the #3 and the #5, pretty good Stuff Maynard.

Then came the clash.

Basics in Leather(Still prefered by some) with Non-Basics in either Factory Kydex or Plastic lined cordura with a handy pouch (Pretty when new but not as durable)

Then Jerry said once Again, " Let all Busse Sheaths be Equal and it was so,

Gone was the Leather, and Cordura with Handy Pouches and Eyelets for Tie downs Ruled the day.
For a While the Basics were in All Black cordura with the Standards knives in the green.

Edited to add.

There are Basics with Factory Penetrator points, there are a few Factory Basics with Teeth, I mean Serrations, small Choils, large choils and a couple with Really really BIG Choils.

I keep one complete set of crinkle in Cordura, a Basic #3 for a Beater, a Basic #5 in Buy Brown Custom Kydex for my wife's Bugout bag, a Basic #9 to loan out to Teeners when Camping and after the Blade West this year my Wife Decided She wanted a Basic #9 for use in the yard now that we are surrounded by Pine trees.

Other than that my Basics Ebb and flow.

I am Giving away a Basic #7 and a Basic #9 in High Desert Low ride this year sometime between now and Christmas one to a Sgt in the Airforce who had signed up for a job that will be getting him Flight pay.

These knives are Way to Cheap to buy, So I just keep buying them and so they tend to get given as Gifts pretty often.

Re-edited to add.

The toughest to find Basics are those with a Factory Satin Finish, like those used in the Tests.

Skunk you are no Doubt a Hope Filled Wild Man.

Good to finally Meet you and Vicky in person after all the cash that has Flowed both Ways.

OMG Satin Basics

I recently scored two Basics off eBay at reasonable prices. A symmetric edge 7 with the original kydex that had been stripped and sent back to the shop for a satin job, and a near mint smooth 5 w/asymmetric edge in original leather. I would like to get a user 9 at a fair price.

The edge seems to be another variable, not mentioned here so far. I was told the change in coating corresponded to the change in the edge.

Other than Special order the edges were all Asymetrical when new.

Special order you could also get Left handed Asymetrical, same as you could order left hand Asymetrical Standard Busse knives, or even Symetrical iffin you wanted such a thing.

I'm with gravelface, the 9 has always been my favorite, but they're all pretty cool. I actually prefer chopping with my 9 over any BM I've tried mostly due to an extremely comfy handle.
