Busse + Beer = ER!

So last night I was topping off my 35th birthday with a nice bottle of St Bernardus Apt 12. It’s a really good Belgian beer with a high alcohol content which snuck up me and caused me to do something really stupid :foot:

My wife was gabbing away on the phone and I was bored so I figured I would spend some time practicing my convex sharpening skills on my HOG SJTAC LE. All was going well and I was pretty much finished when I decided to take a close look at my new edge. I don’t know why but for some reason I dropped the thing from my left hand and instinctively went to catch it with my right hand. Must have been that high alcohol content clouding my good judgement!

Well, the knife was falling handle first with the tip pointing straight up. My right hand came down on top of it and the tip of the knife put a nice gash in the fleshy area below my thumb.

The laceration was deep and blood immediately spurted everywhere. I applied pressure to it best I could but it was immediately apparent that I would need stitches. Of course, like any good Busse fan, I took the time to wipe the blood the blade with some CLP first before calling the wife to drive me to the ER :D

When sewing me up, the doc commented on how nice and clean the cut was so I guess I at least sharpened the knife well! It took six stitches to close the gash and I assume it will leave a nice scar. I hope the scar will remind me to never mix beer and knives again! I was lucky, I didn’t hit a tendon and should have full use of my thumb and hand. But, I won’t be going to the range for a few weekends :grumpy:

Sorry I don’t have any pics of the gash pre-stitches. I was bleeding too bad for that!

Here is what it looked like when I got home:

And here it what it looked like today before cleaning it and re-dressing it:

Let this be a lesson, don’t drink and sharpen!

This accidental cutting seems to be a trend around here at the moment. Be careful fellas!!!!

Sweet!! If I had a dollar for every time I came close to doing something like that, I would be rich!!

Dig the Blue and Black G-10 stiches! ;)

Ouch...

Happy birthday anyhow -- and at least you have a HOGSJTACLE!!!

I understand.

I do not know how many time while working (playing) with my Busses I have knocked one off the bench and about half way through my grab to catch it I think to myself ... " this is really dumb".......

No stitches for me yet but some nice cuts....And this is without alcohol involved!!

haw I did that with a butterfly knife. I was flipping it around, dropped it, then went to catch it and slapped the blade with one of my fingers, cutting it to the bone.

I acquired a LrMr recently, and THAT thing has a reprofiled edge... 15 degrees MAYBE! SCARY sharp. LOL A few weeks ago, it sliced through some tape so quick, it bit my finger on the other hand holding the box pretty hard! Such a clean slice, it healed up nicely... Probably should've gotten a stitch or 2 though. LOL I should have no probs using it to cut STEAK @ Fogos... Bet it'll press cut like as if through butter... Sorta like my finger! LMAO  :o I'm GLAD that ya didn't damage anything more critical, tendons and such.

I used to always try to catch anything that might drop. I stopped this bad habit soon after I started spending time in an operating room. If you drop it... let it fall.

Many times I have seen people get hurt because something dropped and they tried to catch it. Once I had a patient drop a large pair of pruning shears and they didn't catch them, but they did manage to push them throught their foot and pin it to the ground! Be careful (now I'm probably going to cut myself:( )!

I hope you heal up fast.

P.S. stop drinking and handling your knives at the same time (in case you already didn't figure that one out)

Oh... Happy Belated Birthday! (I too will be 35 verrrrrry soon)

This is a trend! I had my SHBM on top my printer and bumped it.....I instantly stuck my foot under it to break the fall before it hit the ceramic floor:eek: .....I was lucky enough not to have it cleave my foot from my shin or have it chip my floor:D

Don't EVER do that again!!! (just some friendly advice from your friendly Busse neighborhood podiatrist)

About 10 years ago I tried to catch a beer glass that someone knocked over on my table and onto my lap. Well I caught it, but the force of the catch + the speed of the fall shattered the glass and one of the fragments cut straight through my thumb to the bone (The sad part is it was going to be my first beer of the night.)

Anyway after 10 hours of reconstructive nerve and mucle surgery at NYU hostipal, and 2 months of physical therapy - I've been able to get back about 90% of the use of it.

So now I let EVERYTHING fall, even if I'm positive I can catch it safely, its JUST NOT WORTH IT.

Happy Birthday!

See, it's never too late to learn something.... :foot: :D

I too have dropped something, only to impale myself on it during my effort to catch it... It's still a hard habit to break, but the Busses fall where they may - I promise that one to be true! INFI is tough enough to let fall...:D

Here's hope for a speedy and full recovery!

Holy cow zephy5... what a cut! That's a bad habit that I'm sure alot of folks share including myself (trying to catch a falling object).

I thought I was doing bad when I sliced my thumb today!

Happy B-day by the way.:)

OUCH!!!

Man that had to hurt! Bet it's not what you had expected for your birthday, but at least there was no serious damage.

Hope the rest of your birthday was a great one!

.

Ouch! I did something like that about a year ago. Medical grade super glue became my friend.

Hope you make it thru without any infection and too much nagging from the wife each time you pick up a blade!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!

Man that cut brings back memories of when I was a meatcutter. Had plenty during those 7 years.

Only been sewed up twice(from a knife) since leaving that work, both times I was playing with a folder.

Hope it heels quick for you and you'll be back to the range soon:thumbup:
