Busse Chopper

I have seen the CG Battle Mistress go for as low as $425, and higher than 550 with sheath. It is not the heaviest, but people love them.

I had a FBMLE, which I loved.

My users right now are a B11 and a KZII. If I had to pick out of the two, especially if price was going to be a strong factor, the B11 won't disappoint.

The sucker chops very well, especially for it's weight. The handle is more comfortable in hard chopping (much less vibration transfer), and weights so much less than the BM or KZ. The ResC handle really reduces shock and hand fatigue from vibration!

You should be able to get one, with sheath for less than your budget.

After some thought and viewing Youtube videos, I have decided on a Scrapyard Dogfather LE as my first chopper. I think it is a good deal, and will leave a few pennies in the pocket for some other camping/outdoor accouterments that I am lacking. I know I said I would wait, but I am not a very patient guy. Now I have to find one.

Of course, Scrapyard doesn't have them in stock. Any suggestions as to where I can lay my hands on a NIB Dogfather LE?

You may need to pray a bit and good luck will have to be with you. You don't see very many up for grabs. Good luck on your hunt.

The DFLE is no longer made ... nor will another run of them happen ... hence "the limited edition" ... they are a superb knife ... in their day they were thought of as a Res C SHBM with their light weight and great balance ... and they chop well too ...

As a consequence when they came up on the secondary market they went for a premium ... I paid $300 for mine ... the guys who scored them on their original release at the listed price got a hell of a deal ...

This was all before the B11 was released ... and now we have B10's at factory prices ... so those who have a DFLE are unlikely to sell them as they probably won't get the price they paid when so many other alternatives are now out there ... there were not many made either ... so for a "collector" they are quite a good find ,,,

What about the plain Dogfather?

Yes you can pick up coated Dogfather's at the shows like Knob Creek ... they have a sabre grind and are a little heavier than the DFLE ... but Scrap Yard seem to have some new releases at Blade which in the larger blades look to be very capable and similar to a Dogfather ... the price point should be good on these too ... especially when released on their site ... and getting good value by buying off the site as opposed to the secondary market is a deciding factor when the knives are so close as the CGDF and the newer "11" series ...

From a "balance" perspective if you like a Res C handle I would try for a flat grind Scrap Yard knife in the 10 inch range rather than a sabre grind ... or consider the Busse Basic 10 which is also flat ground ... sabre grinds with skeltonised handles and Res C grips do feel a lot more blade heavy ...
