"Busse Combat" Style Rivet Usage?

Anyone know if Busse Combat has trademarked the use of their "flared tube" rivets in attaching handle scales?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about incorporating this style of rivet in my hunting knives and want to make sure it's okay. I've seen quite a few other makers do this -but only Busse has done this exclusively.

I have an old David Boye folder (most likely made in the late 80's) in his 440C Dendritic Steel that uses the same style of "flared tube" rivet for holding the knife together and for the lanyard hole.

I also noticed an article in June 2007's Blade Magazine where Wayne Goddard shows readers how to do the same thing, as he uses this rivet on some of his camp knives.

Does Busse Combat own the trademarked rights to this style of rivet or can other makers use it?

Not a definitive answer but with Wayne Goddard doing a tutorial on it I can imagine it would be hard to trademark. It would be like trademarking Corby Rivets - too late - too many are doing them.

Just my thoughts on it. I do like the look of them and plan on trying them on a future knife.

As far as I know, the only thing proprietary on their knives other than the steel is the front talon hole. I'd email Jerry if I were you. He's easy to talk to and I imagine that he'd be happy to talk knives with another maker.

The flared tube is not trademarked by Busse Combat.

Best of luck!

That was very nice of Mr. Busse. It is good to see a guy who has gotten big in the biz still hanging out with us whacky small scale independents and giving words of encouragement:thumbup: :D
