So I have an old friend. I have known him since elementary school and now we just graduated from High School. 4 days after graduation, he ships off to boot camp for the Marine Corps. This is what he has been dreaming about doing since he was little, and he hopes to see some combat. Before he left, he told me and some other friends that he wanted a machete to bring with him into the Sandbox, or Korea, or where ever he is going to be stationed. We told him we would get him a present for when he comes back from Boot. After discussing with the other guys, we decided against getting him some cheapo machete from Wal Mart or Big 5 SPorting goods, and we're going to shell out to pick him up a nice fixed blade that he can rely on. Me being the knife nut in the group, I was assigned the task of picking a company and model to purchase for him. I have picked Busse as the company to buy from, now I need all of your help to pick a model for him.

I am counting on you all to use your expertise to help us give a gift to an old friend. We are looking for something that can be used in combat, but also as a utility blade. We are low budget, so try to keep that in mind. Thanks in advance.

How low is low? Swamp rat or Scrap yard would be a good option to go with as well. Nice knife, not as much as a Busse.

There are a couple in the exchange that aren't too much money. A Yardhook and a Chopweiler... My first choice would be a NMSFNO. They were $327 when available, aren't too heavy and chop really well.

To be honest, this knife might one day save his life, so I don't way to say price is an issue, as long ad it is not $1000 or something.

cg batac. sar4. sar5.

all are not too heavy (big). but plenty enough. also not too expensive.

I will try give you an idea of our incomes: 1 minimum wage job, 2 unemployed, and all of us are starting college soon.

if i were you i'd wait to get it for him until he get out of boot camp. you never know he might not make it through.

or maybe after he finishes itb (infantry training). if he makes it through boot camp he's favored to make it through infantry training but i met a lot of guys that got dropped from that school because of injuries. usually broken ankles and what not.

then get him a kabar.

or your batacle:eek:

yeah that's a good suggestion. k bars are common in the corps and look great in shadow boxes.

you know what you could do is get your buddy a shadow box and a ka bar. just put the ka bar in the shadow box and leave the rest open for medals and awards.

I believe he's going to be issued a kabar already, or so he tells me, so I don't think we'll go that route. He has been training with the USMC for the last year or so, with weekly or bi-weekly PT, on top of his NJROTC PT. I also have no idea what his MOS is, but I am pretty sure he is going Infantry.

believe me that stuff he's been doing on weekends is "NOT" training for the marine corps. that's just trying to get his body ready for what's coming. some guys are in really bad shape and it's a health risk for them.

he's NOT going to be issued a kabar. they don't issue kabars. the closest he'll get is a bayonet and he won't be issued that until he's about to deploy

You probably know better than me. We'll see how it goes.

sounds like he's a pully (spelling?). thats where you train with the local reserve unit during drills, until he ships to boot.

boot camp is not like drill.

i had a kabar while at nta okinawa back in 87. broke the tip prying. my bad. kabar is a decent knife. not just for pics.

i always thought it was pooly or something like that. either way that's the right term but they don't train with the local reserve unit. they train with newly minted marines and recruiters.

it's always soft stuff like slow runs or something like that. i did it for a few months. it was kind of fun one day i even got to go to the range and shoot an m1 grand. it's fun and games to keep kids from changing their minds and joining one of the soft services "chair" force/coast guard

oorah!

back on topic. if he ain't infantry, just get him a decent folder.

speaking of folders...............................................................................
