Ok I have started my new job as an Animal Control Officer.
The other officer and I where talking today after having a pit corner us around a house,it backed off so no big deal.We do carry folders,Manix most of the time for me and a Endura on the other officer. The problem is that you draw the bite stick right handed so if you are alone and the dog does not back off and gets you on the ground with the bite stick you can not draw your knife. We figure it would be a good idea to carry a not to large (PC issues) fixed blade on the belt left side just in case we need it.A folder on the left would not work as it would be to hard to fumble with to open left handed.
I am thinking something non-coated thinner stock with a sharp tip and a wicked sharp blade. The BAD comes to mind or maybe a LMS.
What do you guys think?
BTW we can not carry sidearms,we have a .22 and shot gun in the truck but that does no good if you do not have it with you.

.....why don't you have the .22 and/or shotgun with you? What about pepper spray or bear spray?

A folder as backup is useless. Whether you go to the ground or not, especially if you keep it in your front pocket or even worse, boot. Just practice some defensive tactics and you'll see how easy (not) it is get a folder from your boot or even your front pocket. Are you allowed to get and carry automatic knives? If not, a fixed blade is your only choice.

A good 3-4" utility hunting knife is good, like the Swamp Rat Hairy Carry which is avail at ratknives.com. You only need about 3-4" to penetrate a vital organ. You don't really need a 5-6" satin jack or ASH1. You'll start getting complaints from PC-idiots about an animal control officer walking around with a bowie knife.

If you're allowed to get auto's, blackhawk.com has a great sale on one of their auto for like $79!

Its a PC thing,we do not get out at a house carrying a rifle as most of the time it is used as a last resort. We do carry pepper spray but you have to really watch how and when you use it as it can in the right conditions be worse on you.

My EDC carry is either a SHBA or AD both in a B-T-B (Behind the belt), crossdraw sheath that is used with CCW in mind. VERY comfortable and easy to access. Not a deep cover thing since Fl CCW says it only has to be concealed from casual view and a untucked shirt did the trick. With the shirt tucked in, both ends of the knife are visable enough to qualify IMO as not concealed if your laws go that route. Most of the blade is behind the belt and keeps it very snug against the body, but you can access it while wearing a seat belt or, even sleep with it on without getting poked.

Designed for right handed use, you can still get it easily with the left hand although it will be a reverse grip.

Like I said, very comfortable while driving, sitting and so on, much, much more so than a straight drop sheath. The handle comes out just to the left of your belt buckle, and the tip, just in front of the left pocket. I would guess you will be doing more riding than fighting Pit Bulls so this is a very important consideration.

Works best with knives of about 9 1/2" OAL. Tried forever to get it to work with a SJ, but it was just a bit too long by about 1 1/2"s. ~4 1/2" blades work wonderfully and the BAD would be perfect. I forget that I'm wearing my AD. The fat SHBA always lets you know it's there.:D

I am thinking a Blue-black non coated BAD would be perfect.

PC issues? You work with unpredicable animals that could endanger your life or others and your worried about being politically correct???

Just my 2 cents bro....but screw them! Carry something that could reach a vital organ if needed. Min blade length I would want would be 6 inches, but if you just can't do it then go with a 4 to 5 range.

BATACs are all over the place for sale....good long handle on those, wouldn't have to worry about not having enough handle to grab. You could get a color that matches your uniform...."blend in" so to speak.

Meaners are pretty common right now, but I think that it's a little small for what you would want.

And (pardon the non-Busse suggestion) a Chris Reeve's Shadow IV would be a really good option. They are readily available and priced very reasonablly, and they even come with a sheath!

I don't see how a BAD is going to do alot in a panic/emergency situation, except maybe to piss off a dog. Maybe if you get the animal in the eye with it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great blade for EDC, rope cutting, apple slicing, slicing, dicing, etc but in a situation with a wild pissed off animal, I'd want something a little bigger and with more girth.

Good luck!

I agree with Solstice, get a BATAC, ASH, Hell Razor or something that will do more than irritate the animal. If you pull out a BAD the dog is going to start laughing at you. You know what is a mean blade is the partially serrated custom ASH that Skunk has.

If I pulled the knife they would never see it as they would be on me.We are trained how to handle them, the knife would be for a WTSHTF type deal.
Most of the time a dog will back down when they see the Baton open up.
This job is not quite like a police officer, you have to handle things different.
Most of the time even the person calling in the complaint does not want to see the animal hurt in any way.

I would vote for a Gen1 Howling Rat....nice grippy Res-C handle stout blade....it is probably one of the best knives and still maintaining a bit of PCishness!

That would be a good one,a mud puppy would also work.
You would think a large blade would be better but it would be very hard to carry all day.

Swamp Rat Ratmandu would be perfect.

Not an intimidating knife but would dispatch an agressive dog in a critical situation.

I vote for something along the lines of a MS or Scrapyard SS4. Not too big that it would scare the sheeple and still have a decent enough blade length with a pokie profile. A 3.5-4" blade can create massive wounds and would reach the vitals of most dogs and smaller 2 legged zombies. Just make sure to pump multiple times then push or pull towards the cutting edge under compression.

The Scotch Dispenser would be hard to dislodge from your hand. It would carry easily in a horizontal orientation on your belt or as a necker.

A small BARF would be killer (ha ha).

Leaner Meaner's Common? I wish:p Been wanting one for a while now but Busse hogs are fast to snatch them up when they go for sale. I like the shape and size and think it would be a good knife for Animal Control (or better yet an ASH1 or the new NMSNFO and just figure out a way to wear it more or less concealed. Maybe a shoulder harness underneath a vest.

And recommending a Non Busse knife? Blassphemous:p No only joking but if you don't know where your going or what dog you may have to fight off with a knife while on the ground; it better be a Busse:D

I know half the fun of this topic is arguing about which Busse would work best, but if it was me, I would carry a smaller fixed like the Meaner or an Acitve Duty that has been suggested, but just in case the S really did HTF I would carry Pepper Foam...like the spray except it doesn't spray out in a cloud. Not only could you deter the attack before it became hand-to-paw battle, you don't have the risk of blowback that you have with spray.

I would feel a whole lot better knowing I can put a face full of pepper in that pit bull's face than praying I can get a 3" blade into a vital organ and then keep his jaws away from my face while I wait for him to die so I can push him off me. But that's just me.
