Here is a convexed AK that should do a number on those tatami mats. The owner of this AK will be using it for tamishigiri. I would imagine that this one would easily slash through those mats with relative ease.

HOLY CRAP!!

Yeah, yer gettin' my AK one of these days. Unbelievable work as usual!!

What a beauty!! Banderfulness taken to the next level!

you need to sweet talk Gusthefish out of his Dragon fang, and give er the Ban treatment. That would be awesome.

Ah Ban, your work is amazing!
Did you touch up the edges of the handles too?

Now that's a lightsaber!

The JediHog getting that will be carving mats like demon. Nice work as usual Ban.:thumbup:

You can cut through most mat rolls up to 3 mats with a good thin-ish sharp khukuri, any number of fine Cold Steel products, and I have done so with the Cold Steel Imperial katana.....sharpness, angle and speed all play a factor, so the AK should not have an issue.

That said, I do not know of ANY sensei worth their salt that would allow this item in his/her dojo. Tameshigiri is a time tested way to check ones skills, and introduction of non-traditionally mounted swords is viewed within the JSA community as the unwanted by-product of the West creeping into a traditionally asian Martial Art.

Tamishigiri? Is that what cutting those mats is called? Is it a sport? A competition? A hobby? A martial art? A way to meditate or test your blade? I've seen a couple of videos of mat cutting on the internet....I always thought it was the equivalent of the 2x4 chopping we see so many forumites doing.

You're probably right. But that doesn't mean tameshigiri isn't ridiculously fun with an AK!

I did not do anything to the handle slabs other than sanding it flush to the tang. If you are referring to the handle tang then yes it has got the dimples removed and all exposed edges beveled.

Looks like someone answered my question as I was typing it, thanks Kohai.

They stopped allowing tameshi on humans in the 1600's, as far as I can figure.

You are welcome to the answer, BubbaThud....anyone can cut, but Tameshigiri is an art unto itself, and cannot be done by just anyone.....like the difference between shooting at a range, and being a sniper in the military or law enforcement....takes a lot of training and discipline.

let me know when they make a busse for hamachi nigiri. that's a much more delicious japanese art. so very hungry. :(

As I started reading this thread, I wondered if a dojo would let this blade in the door, and I thought it would be interesting if STeven would chance to see it and offer his insight.

Ban, very cool work! :thumbup::cool:

I forgot to mention this in my last post...

YES! I cannot wait to get this back in my hands again! THANKS BAN!!!!!!

I'd better find a new source for tatami mats because I have a feeling I'll be going through quite a few this summer!
