I'm looking hard at a Busse Hell Razor and plan to use it for camping/field use. I spend a lot of time down in El Sauz, TX hunting hogs and javelina year round, deer in season. I need a super tough blade with great edge holding that can tear through hog hide, bones (I have smaller "skinning" knives but need a larger all purpose blade), and the usual knife destroying jobs around camp. A "do it all" knife and price range <=~$400 (around the price of the hell razor). I'm not sure I want to pack around a 9'' blade (heavy) knife like the battle mistress. I was searching for a tough knife that would last me years and after seeing the Busse "skinny" test started looking at the line. The hell razor 7'' blade looks like the one that would suit my needs. Looking for opinions/options,etc. thanks.

I have a few Hell Razors. They are good knives, but for the uses you describe I would much prefer the Busse Sarsquatch, which has become my preferred all-round "beater".

There are plenty of Busse afficianados, though, who consider the Hell Razor to be the ideal for this size knife.
I don't think that you would be disappointed with it.

Another thought: The Tank Buster available for order now on the Busse Combat Knife Company site would be more readily available and is another option in this general size of knife.

I was checking out the tank busters which are 1/4''. Is the hell razor the only 6+'' blade 3/16'' width widely available? I think I would prefer the 3/16'' width blade for my use. Is the sarsquatch a thinner blade?

The hell razor is my favorite model and i dont see why it couldnt do an adequate job of skinning a large animal im no expert and idont huint but i fish alot and i think that the skill of the user is more important than the tool primitive cave men used rocks.

As for field use look no further busses are arguably the toughest knives on earth. http://www.knifetests.com/busseskinnyash1dtest.html same thickness of blade material and nearly the same width and blade length.

My thoughts exactly. I like the thinner blade and lighter weight for my intended usage. It will be used to get down into the head/neck area of the hog and that job gets tough even with a 5-6'' blade knife. Once you get to that area it's a LOT of work to get down where head can be sawed completely off, very tough skin, fat, meat. A 7'' razor sharp blade would be perfect imo. Hell, I may use the knife to cut the thick hoist rope, then go through bone quartering it. I'm impressed with the Busse steel and even in 3/16'' width. I like the ability to fasten a grip cord across the back of the hand for support as well (which the comparable fehrman's I've seen don't incorporate). I think a thinner ~7'' busse may be ideal.

I checked a couple of vids and found hogcult lol. I may try to find a sarsquatch (thinner blade). nice knife.. that may be what I'm looking for.

Yeah, that knife is IDEAL for a hog that weighs about 50-100 lbs. I have a nice curve blade skinner like that for smaller hogs. We've been taking some in the 250lb range on a regular basis lately. You get about 6 inches thick skin/fat to peel down to the neck area. A bigger blade is necessary. Never seen that style busse knife though, looks like a great skinner! I can't wait to take one of these Busse's out in the field. none of my buddies will know wtf it is for sure, I'm sure it will impress them if it performs like i see on the vids/tests.

Another question... coated blades. do the coatings impede skinning/cutting? The hell razor I'm looking at is coated. I want a durable blade but will take pretty good care of it, cleaning and lubricating. A coated blade may not be my best bet.

damn, the hell razor I was watching already sold.... gotta jump on these things eh?

Could always post in WTB...

Don't forget one other important thing about the hellrazor- it is very cool looking! I love the look and would love to check one out.

Lol, I'm going to do that. I didn't realize how fast these knives move!! I'd been eyeing that hell razor for three days now... had 6 days left on the auction w/ $419 buy it now. Should have jumped it. Ah well, patience is a virtue I guess. They'll be another...

yeah they go fast man.

the coating doesnt really hurt anything in my experience

but you can always strip your blade yourself spray on some paint striper and wait for a few minutess and it will be nekid

this was a very nice one a guy did awhile back called it the ice razor http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=442050

I have a stripped razor i bought from another forum member here hasnt rusted on me at all.

you may want to stri it because you can :D busses are fun knives to own alot of people mod them

hell you could go buckwild and have it stripped and krein reground now that would be a crazy knife.

stick with it youl ind the right busse for you

Oh shit.. that stripped blade is f-in beautiful and the handles on the one I was eyeing were beautiful as well. I'm learning....

Another Hell Razor just popped up on Ebay and I jumped on it. It's mine :D. It's sage finish with G-10 handles. How does the sage coating compare to the others? It looks like it would impede cutting less (a smoother-looking coating). Or maybe it just appears that way in the pictures...

congrats- post some photos and thoughts after you get it!

oooh i love me some g-10 handles i think all of the coatings are supposed to be the same thickness. i dont think it will impede cutting but youcan always strip it if it does. congrats on buying the best.

Good choice, heck of a knife:thumbup:
The Sage seems to be the one of the tougher coatings Busse offers.

No coating will slice as good as a satin blade, but the diff will be small, and I dought you would notice it. You can strip it very easy with paint stripper, but I think I would just leave the coating. If stripped the INFI dimples are very hard to sand out as they go deep. A smooth dimple free satin finish, or a coated one would be best(IMO) since it will be getting wet in hunting conditions.

I just purchased a scrapyard desert dogfather as well lol. Two of the best blades in the world... I'll post some pics next week.

Pics as promised. I laced a d-guard/lanyard from digi-camo. Matches the G-10 handles and sage blade nicely. I can't express how much I love this knife. I've owned many mass-produced knives as well as gov't issue and this thing is in another league. It's a keeper, and will be used frequently. The edge needs some work now.

very nice indeed! I love the color of those handles! Your gonna have some fun with that thing. Your buddies are gonna be jealous, Im sure they will come to their sense and also get one.

Hell razor would be a great choice.

I think the sarsquatch would also be an ideal blade for what you are looking for too. They are thinner than 1/4 inch if I remember correctly.

in that size range if have an Ash1 cg, which is pretty thick. It worked pretty darn well for butchering an elk last season.

A skinny ash would fit the bill as well.
