Busse in the Blue Ridge

Off-topic post - no gear & outdoor stuff here.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Typically I post only about gear & outdoors related things but for once I am going to take the liberty and post beyond my usual topics because I thought some of you may appreciate it nonetheless.

We often spend time in the woods and mountains of Western Virginia but this particular trip was for a specific purpose. Today we strayed out into the city to watch my beautiful daughter perform with the Virginia All State Choir to which she has been selected for the last 2 years. But there was something particular about this performance.

As a young boy in South Africa I sang a well known Southern African song as a member one or more choirs. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that, decades later, I would watch my daughter sing that very Southern African song, in our new home, halfway across the world. So please excuse the indulgence of a proud father:

Awesome video and story... that made my Sunday morning!

This trip was not backwoods camping so after 4 days of carrying it, I still had not found an excuse to use the SAR-8. Time to take to the woods.

Bingo. In a couple of places there were a few broken 2 inch thick trees blocking the trail. I could have easily and quickly just moved them out of the way but having found the excuse I was looking for, they had to be chopped clean off at the breaking point before being dragged out of the way. With a few extra chops so they could fold in the middle. I surely looked like an idiot to my family (a regular occurrence if you ask them) patiently watching this from the truck. But I was having fun.

Are we there yet or is Don Quixote still chopping down twigs?

If he is going to keep doing that, we are just going to walk. Its much faster and we wanna go swim and chase the kids.
