Hey Hogs, I’m enlisting in the US Army soon and I was wondering what everyone’s Busse/Kin of choice would be over there in the Middle East. I’m going as Infantry, if that helps narrow it down.

Looking forward to your responses

I was wondering the same thing. My best friend is entering Marine basic in March. I want to buy him a Busse for his graduation.

A RMD is the largest I would recommend. If you’re going to be in a barracks the max blade length is 3”.......unless it’s a “kitchen” knife. I carried an ash 1 on deployment in 2017 and got talked to by the CSM because it was too big. Some leaders don’t care as much as others.

I’d recommend a Dog Soldier (either 6 or 8); a Busse Basic (choose your length); or a SYKCO blade (if you want to spend less and still have a killer SR101 blade). As you can see, I’m partial to Res-C handles. Love ‘em. It’s lighter than other handle materials — with minimal sacrifice in durability (Res-c’s biggest enemy: extreme heat — like an oven (don’t ask me how I know — hahaha)). Res-C is Super durable, and super comfy. Comfort matters to me. I have a Swamprat Howling Rat with Res-C that I love — somebody tested that thing a while back and the 6 oz little beast was able to cut through car door hinges (beating on knife spine with framing hammer). You can look for the HRLM with Micarta, or the earlier howling rat with Res-C on the Exchange — but the Dog Soldiers will be way easier to find on there. (Go res-C and thank me later)

I would recommend a BG RMD, honestly.

It's technically Combat Grade since Swamp Rat's main blade steel is SR101 but I came here to recommend the same thing! I bought my buddy one for his trip to BMT and @Will York donated a sheath. He's in the Air National Guard but he also works for the forestry service as a ranger so he uses it all the time!

I’ve seen photos of a SJTAC as part of two infantrymen’s kit. Good luck in your choice. And best wishes for a sound and safe deployment.

I was in the navy - Gulf of Oman - so long ago we were issued cutlasses. And matchlocks.

I remember seeing someone here who carried a Boss Jack on their deployment, what do you guys think about that? I’ve always liked that model but have never owned one.

I’d say you couldn’t go wrong with any of the variants of Mean Street. They a bit more compact but 3-3.5 inch blade is probably going to suffice for just about any task you will need it for.
A bit bigger, Badger E2

Battle grade Boss Jack has FFG and will save you a little coin. There’s also the Son of Swat, nice size package knife in Infi or sr101. Also if your looking for Infi look at the Boss Street, thick and thin.

Without any experience and thinking out loud I'd parrot what others have said and take a RMD or variant thereof. That's with the idea of using it more for chores than dispatching fools. If I was kicking down doors I'd feel more confident with a TGLB or variant.

Whatever you decide, shoot me a PM and I'll get it for you (if I can find one).

I will echo what a lot of folks have said .
I am sure the RMD in any of its versions will serve you well.
The FHFG version has become one of my favorites.

Some of the ones you have had and sold over the last couple of years would also do well.

That Killa Bee would have been great
the HOG B8 would be great
the BATAC would be almost perfect
A BT6 would also be awesome
A TGBG would also be great
even the little shiva rex was designed for "personnel" use.

Did none of these work for what you think you need ?
Are you looking for a smaller more easily carried blade ?

Hope you find what you are looking for.
From what I understand that gerber they issue is not so great.

I still have the Bee, but it’s sitting in a display case right now. I sold the rest because they didn’t “fit” me I suppose. Except the HOGB8, I sold that one to get a TGLB.

I’ve been an 11B for a few years and I’ve been issued 2 cutting tools. Right before deployment they gave us a Gerber multi tool and a Gerber seatbelt cutter. They have bayonets but they’re kept in a sealed box in the armsroom.

If you’re wanting to take a knife bigger than a RMD, have a smaller knife on you and the bigger one in your ruck/pack.

I'm Army Guard and if I have to go somewhere my Bandicoot is coming. I prefer smaller and lighter...but still plenty tough.

Course being a knife nut there a couple others too...
