Busse in the Sandbox

I have to agree with the RMD idea. Although my favorite is the TGLB.....it gets heavy after a while....and weight distribution matters where you are going. Congrats.

Never been Army, but just looking at what others are saying here, and my experience with knives, plus what I have HEARD/READ elsewhere on what a personal knife gets used for.... only 3 come to mind.

Standard RMD (the FHFG is nice, maybe a little slicier, but I would want the extra strength of the saber-grind of the standard combat grade RMD)
Dog Soldier 6 (I echo what someone said earlier, Res-C is tough as nails even though it is softer, and will be more comfortable; another consideration: if you end up someplace cold, the Res-C is going to make your cutting life a whole lot easier).
Alpha Dog 6 (I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned already. About the same size as the DS6, but a little slicier. On second thought, the DS6 would probably be better than the AD6 for the same reason I say the RMD would be better than the FHFG RMD.)

I HAVE worked with knives in the cold. It is MUCH nicer to grab hold of the grip of Res-C than than a full-tang knife with the tang exposed all around. And IME, the Res-C works better with gloves, too.

I ALMOST recommended an AD6 because I really love the shape, faux swedge, and handle (My first Res-C and I’m hooked)... but I’ve had a really hard time getting it to work in a kit. different set ups, different rigs, different sheaths, it still needs to be carried low on a belt or in a drop leg to make it work for me and I don’t like a knife hanging out like that (in that kind of setting). That being said: I’m never giving up my BIG DC AD6.

Thank you, gk4ever2. Broad sails and man-powered oars rapidly drove our fearsome sea-vessels headlong into a swirling, oath-hurling, and blood-spilling aquatic conflagration with great numbers of evil and heathen-worshiping Saracens.

I usually wore my ASH1 in a kydex sheath scout style or it was in my pack. It was out of the way but easy to get too. My sheath did crack from getting too cold though.

:D

War Dog, Boss Jack or hopefully (one day) Basic Jacks...Boss Jack .20 thick and a Basic Handle
Basic Jack - that's a good idea! My 2nd Busse knife was a Satin Jack in early 2002 - they were all 1/4" thick at the time (3/16" thick SJs came out a little later).

I appreciate your suggestions everyone. A couple hogs with DS6’s have contacted me, but does anyone have a Boss Jack they would be willing to part with?

My Leaner Meaner was all I needed the last time I went to Iraq. Not a bunch of things to chop over there. Opening boxes and cutting bands on crates is about as exciting as it gets. I was a Grunt for over 20 years. I had several blades to choose from in my bag depending on where I was going. Something along the lines of the old original Satin Jack would probably be the most long term useful blade.

Some thoughts:
There have been quite a few military over runs that I’ve had the honor of acquiring over the years. The marines have upgraded their old ka bar to the Ontario okc3s which is like a Ka bar on steroids , serrated and it also their issue bayonet. Great piece of kit. But back to Busse.
One of the best for infantry imo would be the sjtac. One time Jerry made an “embrace the suck” version as well as the Axelson commemorative. It’s good for a fighter and utility.
The RMD would be great to put on your lbe and is the perfect size and weight for general use
The old st56 is more of a special purpose killing knife with a slender blade, and the old 3b2 was a .187 ash1 that was about near perfect in the hand. Boss jack or badger attack are also a sweet blades for the lbe.
If you want a beefy knife, that will fit in a spec ops sheath you can get at the px for about $40 the ultra light TG would be a heck of a blade for your belt, but again, you have to pack what you pack.
I’ve got a sterile old style hell razor that I got from a grunt buddy who carried it and liked it a lot. Any of these along with a leather man tool would be good.
Good luck, so many good blades that will not fail you in the field. All feel good it just depends on your choice of weight and size.

There’s a Boss Street for sale right now on the exchange. Ought to be perfect for your needs. Keep it small, handy, and light. You don’t need anything too big, and you won’t be fighting with it.

A word on weight: A loaded 30 rounder is about a pound, so balance the value of an extra one of those against the weight of the knife.

“Embrace the Suck” might sound high speed low drag and all that, but also remember you can make your own misery. A nice, lightish, sturdy knife is all you need. You’ll mostly be just opening things with it.
