busse knives

If you try a Busse knife...I absolutely guarantee two things - 1) It will not suck, and 2) you will buy another one :D

+1 :D

I came here looking for just one... THE one, that would last a lifetime.
Now... I have many, many, many! :p

I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said... but really, just try one and you'll see.

.

sweet i will let you know what i come up with. whats this "exchange" I keep hearing about?

You didn't mention what kind of knife you're looking for - the small Busse's are cool and all, and I have a few of them, but where Busse really shines is in BIG, TOUGH, BURLY blades.

My Active Duty could pretty easily be replaced by a folder or small fixed blade from any company, and not notice much of a difference, but my NMSFNO.... that thing is in a class all by itself.

My randell comes to mind first, beautiful knife but it won't hold a edge. I am looking for a 6 or 7 inch blade for just about everything from a hunting knife to shelter building if needed. I am looking at a hell razor, what is this blade designed for in your opinions? The blade is 3/16 thick, i like the idea of busses 1/4" or even 3/8" thick blades.

easy one... if you can put up with an extra inch on the blade...

Heavy Heart Fusion Steel Heart (HHFSH) or Heavy Ordinance Grade Fusion Steel Heart (HOGFSH)

(not my picture but...) HOGFSH, CG Fusion Battle Mistress (I think), Hellrazor, HHFSH...
HOGFSHHHFSH.jpg

Either would be indestructible!!! Happy Hunting:thumbup:

Oops, I guess I missed the part where you DID say what knife you're looking for...

you've got a LOT of options in the 6-7" range... SFNO, Hell Razor, SARSquatch, SJ TAC, ASH (skinny or regular), Tank Buster, etc etc etc....

I know for a fact that there's a gorgeous SJTAC for sale ;) but there are a LOT of other options. Your best bet would be to check out a place like http://www.hogcult.com/chart and see if anything specific catches your eye.

Personally, for mostly woods use, the Hell Razor wouldn't be my first choice. A simpler knife, without blood grooves and funky corrugations, would be the top of the list. The SFNO, if you can find one and are willing to pay the price premium, would be an awesome choice, as would a Skinny ASH, which is a favorite woods knife for many folks, and there are more of them on the exchange. I'd recommend the SJTAC too, but that's a conflict of interest :D

The SFNO Sabre ground would be my number one choice. It is sweet! I would definantely want satin if I were you, so the ASH-1 LE or one of the new Tank Busters in Satin would also be great. I prefer the Special Forces handle to the TAC Handle of the tank buster, but I prefer the Sabre grind of those 2 blades to the full flat grind of the ASH-1. If you have a strong opinion on choils, that could help you narrow it down. Have fun and good luck.

I used to scoff at expensive knives. After all, why the hell would someone spend $300, $400, $500+ on a knife, when a $50.00 knife will do the job?

Then I broke two Kabars (The stick tang USMC knife) batonning hard wood.

Then I finally broke down and bought a Busse. Pictures and reports do not do these knives justice. You'll only really know what the fuss is all about when you actually buy one and beat the hell out of it, only to see it sitting there laughing at you.

A few years ago I never would have imagined myself spending hundreds of dollars on a knife, and I now own several.

I will never purchase any other brand of fixed blade again (with the exception of Swamp Rat and Scrapyard).

There are several 6-7" blades that will do very well for you, including the SFNO, ASH, Hell Razor, SJTAC, etc. If you don't mind an extra inch of blade, the NMSFNO is one hell of a brute.

I carry a SJTAC most of the time.

it has there carbon steel, my wife custom ordered it from randell for my b day about 10 years ago, ita a bitch to sharpen and just dosen't hold a edge very long.

Honestly. Not worth the money. Any body that wants to get rid of theirs and buy something better, just send it my way. I will dispose of it properly.

It is tough stuff. I accidentally chopped a stone in half, about a pea sized rock found its way onto the splitter stump, split it, and did not chip the edge. I have also had edge to concrete contact (another careless guy using mine, kept banging it on the concrete table we were butchering an elk on. No rolls or chips. Just a bit of blunting.

I have thrown mine, and pried with even the thinnest My SS, and it did not take a set. I never would ever do that with most other knives, especially one that thin.

For survival in the woods for backpacking, your obviously trying to keep weight down, while having a functional tool. Here are some thoughts:
If you don't mind carrying a little extra weight, a Fusion Steel Heart or HOFSH could definately be a good chopper for making expedient shelters and a good size for heavy use. " I think the FBMs and FFBMs are just too much to carry all day for backpacking"
a good mid size knife if the FSH is too much would be the intermediate size Special forces Nuclear OUtlaw "SFNO" preferable the saber grind. The Sarsquatch and NMSFNO are nice blades of good size as well.
Another good one is the ASH1.
anything smaller and your suffering majorly in chopping power. there are many great small Busses that would be great for cutting things, but for cutting and making shelters, I wouldn't go less than a ASH1 due to loss of chopping ability to take down small saplings for shelter.
I take out the FSH.. It does everything I want it to do.

In all fairness, you don't have to have serious chopping power to build a shelter. A blade with enough length to go through the log you want to cut, plus a baton, will often get through nearly as fast as a chopper.

That said, my go-to woods blade is usually either an NMSFNO or Scrap Yard SoD. Not because I do much chopping with them, but because the extra length is nice for batoning to split larger logs.

I think my IDEAL woods knife would be a SAR 8 - since it's not as wide of a blade profile as the NMSFNO, it should weigh a bit less, and I like the handle shape a lot. However, the Satin finished SAR 8's were more than I was willing to pay, and there is no sign of a CG version, so I guess I have to settle for my NMSFNO.

I dont have one yet, but I would go with the SFNO. I held one at Knob Creek and it felt great. I have a sarsquatch, which I feel is very similar, and it is a great blade as well. I agree that You may not need 1/4 plus thick blade. I would not want to go under 3/16 though. You have many choices in the range you are seeking. Happy hunting!
