Busse or Fehrman ?

Corwise,
If you like Busse knives, but you want cushoned handles look into Scrap Yard Knives. They are made by the Busse clan and have Respirine-C handles.
I highly recommend them.

This handle material is not the nicest looking, but I have to agree with this recommendation. I can't believe how tough and comfortable the handle on my swamp rat is.

Wow, I appreciate all the responses and the quick education...

For what it is worth, I made the trip down to Fehrman Knives several months ago to purchase two of their VTAC Tomahawks. Their factory is about an hour south of me here in Ohio. You could not ask for a nicer bunch of people. One of the company engineers gave me a tour of the entire factory, including all areas where the custom knives are built. I watched the flats being CNC' d onto a blade. I also brought up the posting I saw here from Cliff Stamp about the chipping of the edge of their knife blades and they said they made changes to assure that would not happen again. I will probably purchase a Peace Maker, or perhaps a Last Chance.

My apologies to pitdog, it was not my intention to hijack this thread...

Which changes did they make with respect to the chipping issue? I am curious as to what they did.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe they told me the angles were changed and perhaps a slightly convex profile... Perhaps this is a question better put to Eric at Fehrman...

I am about to order one so I will ask...

They could have taken the blade geometry down to thinner at the shoulder and had a narrower and more obtuse edge bevel with little or no loss in cutting ability. I've become a big believer in fairly obtuse (30-35 degrees included) edge bevels with thin shoulders (0.01"-0.02" depending on size of blade).

I just got may first Fehrman the other day, a stain First strike. I am very impressed with this knife so far. It came shaving sharp and the fit and finish is perfect. I am going to use this knife as I would my busse users and I think it will perform perfectly.

I have eight busse knives (and a few swamp rats) three of which are users and have had great success with them. They are all supurb knives. Fehrman and Busse are my two favorite brands now, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

My Busse's have laughed off all of my attempts to damage them, only a little coating wear is visible.

I'm no Cliff Stamp but I have started to use my Busse's in ways that I would have never have attempted 2-3 years ago.

I'm sure Fehrmans are good knives but a Busse will not disapoint you. If you are concerned about the edge geometry, just ask and Busse will grind it thinner.

I have received a couple Busse's with rather thick and not very sharp edges but recently they have been much sharper initially. From what I understand, the final sharpening is done by hand so it is a bit variable but they will resharpen it if you don't like the edge. My latest will give me a real close shave (dry).
